This summer,2K Gameswill reveal a new addition to one of its “biggest and most beloved franchises.” Speculation among fans over which2K Gamesfranchise is getting a new iteration has been running rampant on social media.

Some of 2K Games' biggest franchises include theBioShock,Mafia, andBorderlandsseries, as well as properties likeCivilizationandXCOM. The studio is also known for sports simulators such as theNBA 2Kseries,WWE 2K,PGA Tour, and therecently released tennis titleTopspin 2K25, but many of these series see annual releases, so a new game seems unlikely based on the announcement.

According to the announcement, the reveal will come duringthis year’s Summer Games Fest on June 7. No details have been given other than where and what day, but it hasn’t stopped fans from theorizing, speculating, and above all hoping for good news regarding their favored franchise.

Many have pointed out that because of theBorderlandsmovie releasing this summer, it would make sense to announce a new entry to drum up hype for it. While the media synergy angle is strong, others are speculating that it could be the long-awaitedBioShocksequel that was confirmed to be in developmentby 2K Games back in 2019. Still others believe that theMafiaseries is a good bet due to confirmation in 2022 from developer Hangar 13 that aMafiaprequel is in production, but some think a two-year development cycle seems unlikely for such a title.

The announcement comes on the heels of layoffs at Take-Two Interactive, 2K Games' parent company. In early May there were reports that Take-Two had shut down Intercept Games, the studio behindKerbal Space Program 2, and Roll7, which releasedOlliOlli Worldback in 2022. Despite executives at Take-Two declining to specify which studios, if any, have been shuttered, many have connected these layoffs toTake-Two’s purchase earlier this year of Gearbox, the studio that developed theBorderlandsseries.

Summer Games Fest, 2K Games, and One Vague Announcement

Interestingly, there’s been no word from Take-Two or 2K regarding the announcement this summer. 2K Games' Twitter account doesn’t seem to have interacted with the announcement, and Take-Two doesn’t appear to have an account at all. Still, none of this has stemmed the tide of hope or hype that someone’s favorite2K Gamesseries is getting a highly anticipated announcement at this year’s Summer Games Fest.
