Hogwarts Legacywas one of the first big events of the stacked 2023 gaming calendar, and did well to set the tone of the year moving forward. The Avalanche Software-developed project was a positive sign of things to come for those searching forHarry Pottergaming experiences. It recreatedHogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardryto great effect, and surrounded it with an open world that needed to be explored in fine detail to uncover all its secrets.
Seeing the school once again through the eyes of an entirely customizable student, was wonderful, and fleshed out more of the setting in a time period that theHarry Potterbooks have yet to explore. However, the student perspective is one that has been used a lot. The inevitableHogwarts Legacysequel could make a narrative leap forward by making the main character a professor, changing the whole angle that the game and broader Wizarding World is seen through.

A Hogwarts Professor Protagonist Could be a Fun New Perspective
As a student, there were always others through the story inHogwarts Legacythat shepherded the player from place to place, be it professors, the Keepers, or other Hogwarts pupils in need of a favor. It helps to give the game focus, but this comes at the cost of limiting the impact of decisions on the narrative. Putting gamers in the role of a professor could be an interesting new spin, as they could manage the responsibility of meddling kids, teaching classes, and having a substantial impact on the school at large.
A sequel could put players back in the shoes of the character they took on in the first game, but a few years later when they take up a role as a teacher. It’s not uncommon for the franchise, as series favoriteNeville Longbottom returns to be a Herbology teacherand the Head of Gryffindor after his time as a student comes to an end. Going back as a pupil once again could run the risk of being repetitive, and render the budding series a one-trick-pony.
Classes Were Optional in Hogwarts Legacy
Hogwarts Legacygave fans the opportunity to experience the castle halls as a student, satisfying a dream scenario for millions of fans of the franchise. Using the sorting hat to join one of the four distinct and iconic houses, and finding a home in one of the beautiful common rooms was amazing. LikeHarry, Hermione, and Ron, it doesn’t take long for the protagonist to be thrown into the deep end with a conspiracy that untangles through the story, going through the motions to create a satisfying experience.
However, it wasn’t surprising at all, and never subverted expectations by doing anything that wasn’t already documented in the promotional material before its February release. The player character is in a similar position to Harry Potter,Professor Eleazar Fig is clearly the game’s take on Dumbledore, and while the other teachers have interesting quirks, they dished out no punishments for skipping classes. It’s a minor frustration, but one that shows thatHogwarts Legacywas somewhat predictable, and didn’t manage to fully capture all sides of being a student at the prestigious school. The sequel switching to a professor’s outlook could be the key to keeping fans on their toes, and provoke a story that has the freedom to go just about anywhere.
Hogwarts Legacyis available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, with a Switch release scheduled for Jul 05, 2025.
