No one was exactly sure what to expect fromA Total War Saga: Troy. WhenTotal War Troywas announced, there was a question of how it would compare to otherTotal Wargames. Only now are the answers coming clear.
For the most part,Total War Troyis a lot like otherTotal Wargames. Players will have to take control of a single faction and its commanding hero and lead their people to victory. The campaign centers around the battle between the Danaans (Greeks) and Trojans in the battle laid out in theIlliadand concluded in theOdyssey. There are several new mechanics to learn, one of which is how the game is won. There are two different victory types, including the Homeric Victory.

First off, there are lots of different elements to learn inTotal War Troy, and all of them are important for winning the game. It’s definitely worth checking outTotal War Troybeginner’s guidefirst. Also, the Homeric Victory has different requirements than the Total War Victory.
Step 1: Complete the Epic Missions
Every faction leader has an Epic Mission questline. Completing these missions is technically optional, but not if players want a Homeric Victory. These are not so different from the story quests available to complete inTotal War: Warhammer 2, where each task completed puts your legendary lord one step closer to great power. In this case, it equates to completing the faction leader’s personal storyline.
SadlyHenry Cavill fromTotal War: Warhammer 2is not around this time, but there are heroes like Hector of Troy and Odysseus to choose from. Expect each mission to be difficult, and the triggers for what unlocks the next Epic Mission are not always clear, as it’s not always as straightforward as just completing the previous mission. This means players cannot simply wait until their armies are late-game powerhouses and then blast through all the missions at once.
Step 2: Conquer the Foes
The second step requires certain factions to be conquered, either through confederation or destruction. These other factions are logically chosen based on what faction the player controls. Hector’s Trojans, for example, must defeat the Mycenae (the main Greek force arrayed against them), the Spartans, Icathians (Odysseus' people), and the nation of Pythia. Unlike the Total War Victory, which requires a minimum number of locations conquered, this requires certain factions to be defeated entirely. It is uncertain at this time whothe Amazons from the upcoming DLCwill have to conquer, or who will have to conquer them.
Step 3: Miscellaneous
Not all epic heroes have a step 3. Some require other things, like holding a certain minimum influence across several locations. Any additional requirements will be laid out on the Homeric Victory screen. These must be planned for in advance in addition to the conquering that has to happen. Try to build up to the final requirement(s) as areas are conquered, as it will save time and effort later.
That’s about all there is to Homeric victories. Only time will tell ifTotal War: Troymakes its way into ranks ofthe bestTotal Wargames.
