Apex Legendsfans are getting a lot ofnew content teasers for Season 6of the popular battle royale game, and some of the changes could have a big impact on the mechanics. A Respawn developer has teased Evo Shields being starting equipment in Season 6, which could shake up the whole armor system.

Evo Shields are a relatively new addition toApex Legendsthat start off worse than basic white body shields but get progressively stronger the more damage players inflict on opponents. After the System Override event earlier this year,Evo Shields are still inApex Legendsand are moving toward becoming an integral part of the game. Ever since their introduction, Evo Shields have been considered a powerful part of the metagame and utilized by many players.

Daniel Klein, a Respawn developer, took to Reddit to discuss the"Always Be Closing" LTM, a fan-favorite game mode returning toApex Legendslater this month. Reddit user ParagonRenegade called Evo Shields the “best addition to the game so far” and said they should be “mandatory” in base game modes. Klein commented “good idea,” leading to a discussion about whether Klein was serious and if making Evo Shields “mandatory” would even work.

A lot of people disagreed on this, with the main argument against making Evo Shields mandatory based on the concern that player health shouldn’t be based on whether they find people early on in the game. User PwnedDead pointed out that some players get dropped far away from others and can go through the entire match alone, meaning there would be no opportunity to level-up Evo Shields. Klein acknowledged this as “100% a real thing.”

Klein responded to this comment saying that he’d love to address the problem of being unable to find other squads in-game.Apex Legendsplayers are known for finding creative solutions for defeating their enemies, but many people share a frustration about this particular aspect of the battle royale. Klein also acknowledged that the devs will work on a way to preserve the joy of the “opening scramble” that players love instead of instantly handing everyone a powerful piece of armor with no caveats.

Some people were in favor of the idea, with a common argument being that Evo Shields up the speed and aggression of the game, and rewarding players who take risks. And if Respawn does work out a way to integrate Evo Shields into all games without causing the issues brought up by Reddit users, hopefully they can do so while avoiding the infamousgamer dev crunch culture.

Apex Legendsis out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a Switch release coming later this year.
