Summary

Ubisoft’sAvatar: Frontiers of Pandorawill allow players to experience cooperative multiplayer with their friends even if they are on different platforms. Details regarding this and other features like support for image upscalers have started to surfaceas the game nears its December 7 launchon PC, consoles, and cloud streaming platforms.

Set in the universe of theAvatarsci-fi media franchise created by filmmaker James Cameron,Avatar: Frontiers of Pandorawill let gamers take on the role of a member of the series' most prominent alien race, the Na’vi. A third-person action shooter that served as a tie-in for the firstAvatarmovie from 2009 offered a similar premise, but the new title promises to be grander in scale and have even more features.

Among these features is cross-platform co-op multiplayer for up to two people, which the game’s social media page confirmed in a recentInstagram post. Swedish developer Massive Entertainment explained in an interview withWccftechthat one of the players will act as the host, while the other one will be a guest. The latter will supposedly keep whatever progress they achieved throughout these sessions, including gear, items, and collectibles.

In addition to supporting cross-play co-op,Avatar: Frontiers of Pandorais looking to step up from the2009Avatarmovie tie-in gameby offering an open world first-person experience. Although Massive Entertainment did note that the game will switch to a third-person perspective during some moments to give players a smooth and enjoyable experience. These moments will allow the game to showcase the world of Pandora too, according to the developer. As expected of a modern release,Avatar: Frontiers of Pandorawill also support image upscalers like Nvidia’s DLSS, AMD’s FSR, and Intel’s XESS.

Plot wise,Avatar: Frontiers of Pandorawill tell a standalone story that revolves around a Na’vi raised by the Resources Development Administration, the human faction that served as the main antagonist in Cameron’s movies. Elements of the gamecould carry over into futureAvatarmovies, the series' film studio Lightstorm Entertainment previously revealed. While such integrations could enrich the respective stories ofAvatar: Frontiers of Pandoraand the movies, particularly the still-unnamed thirdAvatarfilm, they could also muddy the existing lore and make the franchise’s timeline more confusing. Fans will have to have some time to make their own conclusions as the next movie in the series is scheduled to be released in late 2025.
