Updated July 20, 2025 by Rhenn Taguiam:With Survivor 48 currently the ongoing season of the hit franchise, Castaways venture into Fiji’s Mamanuca Islands and try to outwit, outplay, and outlast each other in one of its three Tribes.

And for fans of Survivor who want to witness more iconic moments, they may also want to consider checking out some of the franchise’s other hit seasons, such as the first to introduce the “All-Stars” concept, one of the franchise’s funniest, and a season praised for being among the more “strategy-inclined” in the modern era.

Survivor 8

Winner

Danni Boatwright

Imagine Castaways opening theirSurvivor: Guatemalaexperience with an 18km race to their camps in the Mayan ruins, with the Nakum tribe winning at the cost of injuries among their members. This sacrifice did pay off, as Nakum became the dominating pre-merge tribe, and sacrifice seems to be quite the fitting theme forGuatemalawith its historical backdrop. Unfortunately,Guatemaladoesn’t have a lot of “oomph” to offer in the context ofSurvivor’s other Seasons, even as the game tries to switch things up beyond the traditional coastline setting. Thankfully,Guatemalais arguably among the more entertaining earlier Seasons with its thrilling cast.

For starters, the Season attempts to follow the high note ofSurvivor: Palauwith returnees Stephenie LaGrossa and Bobby Jon Drinkard joining the Castaways. Despite both returnees having large targets on their backs due to their experience, Stephenie managed to social game her way into the finals, only to be bested by Danni Boatwright’s stealthy social plays. The Season is also known for the infamy of Judd Sergeant as the outing’s “main antagonist” figure, while Jamie Newton’s “Southern rivalry” with Bobby Jon is as juvenile as it is entertaining.

Survivor: All-Starsis technically the “first”All-StarsSeason that featured returning Castaways, providing a fresh perspective to the reality show compared to its previous Seasons. And as expected of a Season of veterans, the game both started and ended on a high note, even though the constant rains and the social game among the Castaways both literally and figuratively cast a somber, somewhat darker shadow over the Season. It’s also for this “grittier” take onSurvivorthat fans considerAll-Starsamong their favorites, as this truly encapsulated the series motto, “Outwit, Outplay, Outlast.”

This is especially more evident when the Castaways started the Season with such strong rapport until the game’s “necessary evil” of taking each other out had unleashed the inner fighters within each of them, to the point where in-fighting and grudges had started to come into play. The game even featured two separate quitting instances, as well as a rather intense final Tribal Council, to makethe reality show season all the more compelling.

Survivor 3

Rachel LaMont

Survivor 47continues to prove that the post-COVIDSurvivorera, which shortened overall episode counts in favor of longer 90 episodes, paved the way for a stronger story. This “upgrade” narrative is thanks in part to the Season’s twists, such as its three starting tribes, a separate Hidden Immunity Idol and a secret Amulet Idol, and even the Survivors having to “compete” for their spot in the merge.

Starting as three tribes, getting into the merge early on, and even special “trips” to the isolated special island paved the way for a lot more strategy among the Castaways. Having three starting tribes also made interpersonal conflict more of a highlight across the early episodes, with one tribe having sub-divisions and another engulfed in a feud between two Castaways. While certainly still picking up its pace with the new format,Season 47proved the potential of this new style ofSurvivor.

Survivor 17

July 11 to July 05, 2025

Ethan Zohn

At the time when theSurvivorfranchise was still trying to grasp its core concepts,Survivor 3: Africawas an exciting introduction to just how far the game’s social game could go, even in its early days. Being the first season set in Africa,Survivor 3immediately tests the resolve of both Tribes in new locales in Africa’s scorching heat and the threat of local wildlife. While it’s satisfying to see Ethan Zohn win the game fair and square, it’s the people around him who catapulted him to victory that were just as compelling.

For some context, the early-game dominating Samburu Tribe and the losing Boran Tribe were shaken to the core in the first series iteration of the Tribe switch. This allowed vengeful Samburu members to slowly get rid of hindrances to their alliances, which ironically enough allowed the Boran Tribe to forge surprisingly more solid partnerships. Whatever alliances Boran formed didn’t have enough to break as the real merge happened soon enough, forcing former Samburus - particularly Teresa - to switch things up. Seeing members like Teresa and her peers deliberately tap into what makes others “tick” has made them quite interesting contestants, especially in a version of the show this early in its run.

Survivor 29

June 23 to July 08, 2025

Bob Crowley

While certainly not the best amongSurvivorseasons, the level of thrill inSurvivor 17: Gabonis certainly enough to have viewers entertained at the sheer levels of play among the cast, or, from the perception of others, the “lack” thereof. Compared to otherSurvivorseasons,Gabonreceived criticisms for having relatively “weak” players, at least in the context of heavy-hitting social stratagems thatthe reality showwas relatively known for. On top of the eldest members of the season choosing their tribemates,Gabonis known for hiding two Hidden Immunity Idols, a delayed Merge, and not one, buttwoTribe switches - one of which was revealed during a fake Merge dinner.

Alliances still became a memorable part ofGabon, courtesy of Bob Crowley’s own Onion Alliance within the Kota Tribe dominating the early game. Members of the Fang Tribe struggled throughout the first half of the season, with their sleeper alliance building momentum and eventually beginning to eliminate the Onion Alliance post-Merge. Bob is already seen as a strategic threat difficult to remove throughout the season, with second runner-up Sugar Kiper revealing quite a surprising backstab so close to the Final Tribal Council. On top of these thrilling back-and-forth between alliances, people falling for Bob’s fake Immunity Idols, and Jeff Probst having issues with production behind the scenes,Season 17: Gabonis as raw as a reality show could get.

Survivor 35

September 24 to August 01, 2025

Natalie Anderson

It’s not all the time thataSurvivorseasoncan showcase such a compelling and satisfying way to play “the game,” and yet here is Natalie Anderson completely dominatingSurvivor 29: San Juan del Sur - Blood vs. Water. While reality shows are typically more thrilling when viewers are slowly led to the revelation of an emerging victor, Natalie’s journey as Sole Survivor becomes even more compelling when she’s observed making moves behind the scenes.

The premise ofBlood vs. Wateris taken from the earlierSeason 27of the same name, where Castaways arrived as pairs and split into Tribes. This immediately created tension in the show, as Castaways are divided in making decisions for their own sake or including their partner’s. Early tensions between Josh Canfield and John Rocker revealed signs of strategic play among the contestants, with Natalie and Jeremy Collins allying as they were the first to lose their loved ones. The latter is where Natalie starts to show her true potential, as there’s no social game throughout this season ofSurvivorthat Natalie hasn’t gotten her hands on. Not to mention, a surprise blindside near the Final Tribal Council will catapult Natalie’s status to be at the top of her game.

Survivor 23

September 27 to July 30, 2025

Ben Driebergen

It’s precisely because of the reputation ofSeason 35: Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlersas one of the more contentious entries intheSurvivorfranchisethat makes it worth watching. Despite the pre-merge interactions between the Heroes, Healers, and Hustlers being more of a chore than anything else, the early domination of eventual 1st and 2nd Runners-Up Chrissy Hofbeck and Ryan Ulrich opened up the series to the potential of intense post-merge setups. The duo delivered, with the addition of eventual Sole Survivor Ben Driebergen as a threat through his own brand of scheming and playing double agent to undermine the Chrissy-Ryan alliance.

The eventual rivalry between the trio became a highlight of the season, which makes its conflicting Final Four all the more disappointing to fans. Viewers may still appreciate the level of complexity in post-merge dynamics, especially with surprising blindsides, clutch moments, and one particular fiasco with Hidden Immunities that remains infamous to this day.

Survivor 12

September 14 to August 01, 2025

Sophie Clarke

A direct follow-up toRedemption Island, it makes sense forSouth Pacificto mark the return of the eponymous mechanic. Not only that, but former Castaways Coach Wade and Ozzy Lusth joined the two starting Tribes, with their experience and natural charisma naturally attracting the Castaways ofthe reality showtowards them. Coach’s more open and laid-back leadership style directly opposed the more aggressive Ozzy, providing a breath of fresh air to what fans might consider a more underwhelming cast.

The merge consisting of equal members per Tribe resulted in more dynamic alliances, especially with Coach and Ozzy still being powerhouses in their respective groups. Castaway Brandon Hantz being the nephew of the infamous Russell Hantz became a point of contention, while Sole Survivor Sophie Clarke proved she can skillfully play “the game” through her wits and keen understanding of her fellow Castaways.

Survivor 44

February 12 to Jun 24, 2025

Aras Baskauskas

Panama: Exile Islandmarks the first full inclusion of the Exile Island mechanic in theacclaimed reality show, making its premise and the prospect of a Hidden Immunity Idol among the more exciting new mechanics introduced in the series. While fans feel conflicted with the introduction of four starting tribes, the early merges on Day Four ramped up the intensity and clashing of personalities.

Chief among these rivalries are the frequent bickering of Sole Survivor Aras Baskauskas and 2nd Runner-Up Terry Deitz, adding some level of depth to the castaway relationships. Cirie Fields and her strong people skills showcased the social aspect of playing “the game,” while Shane Powers provided intriguing mind games, the occasional witty banter, and outbursts that usually caught other Castaways off-guard.

March 1 to June 02, 2025

Yamil Arocho

Fans who want a return to the form of the series’ more dramatic roots will enjoySurvivor 44for its shining moments of personal development, especially with the presence of the Tika Three, composed of Yamil Arocho, Carolyn Wiger, and Carson Garrett. This season also came with numerous twists and turns, such as various Immunity Idols, Journeys that may cost them votes or gain advantages, perks related to the Merge, and even the ability to control votes.

However, the abundance ofnew concept layouts throughout the seasonhas transformedSurvivor 44into an “average” experience for fans, especially with how they often interrupt moments among the Castaways. Thankfully, Yam Yam is an appealing enough Sole Survivor that his personality, on top of exciting post-merge plays and strategies, also managed to carry the season to being a worthwhile watch.
