Call of Duty: Warzonehas been a hit with players as it has used the mechanics of the rebootedModern Warfarein a popular game mode. The free-to-play title has managed to compete within thesaturated battle royale marketand while many will attribute its popularity of the game to being part of one of the most commercially successful game franchises of all time, the mode has introduced unique elements. The title now looks set to be a part of futureCall of Dutygames.
The recentModern Warfarereboot has smashed sales recordsand as a result, it is natural that a free addition to the title would draw the attention of players. Infinity Ward’s Design Director, Geoff Smith, explained the direction of the game in an interview about the release of Season 5.

The director explained thatWarzonewas initially going to be an independent iteration of theCall of Dutyfranchise, however, it was later decided that it would be attached to the currentModern Warfarerelease. The initial plan to be a sole entry is supported by the frequent new content and considerableupdates that have featured inWarzone. The game now seems to be taking a more supportive approach and is set to “evolve” with the franchise and Smith noted that, “Over time, it [Warzone] will evolve and become tied to other games in theCall of Dutyuniverse.“Many will be interested in what changes will be introduced and whether the format of the game will change with new releases.
Call of Duty: Warzonemay be able to avoid the pitfalls that fans tend to notice when a new title is available by continuing to learn from the current iteration while adding in new elements once they have been a proven success. Equally, the title may fall into the trappings of premiering bug-filled mechanics that may alienate its audience. Nonetheless, the fact that the game will now be integrated into future games speaks to its success, although it is unclear what changes will eventually be implemented. At the moment it seems thatWarzonewill largely stay the same in Season 5until a new game complicates how it ties into other products.
It is clear thatCall of Duty: Warzonehas a bright future and many will be pleased that the game mode is set to continue to adapt to changes in the gaming industry. With this in mind, it seems that the free-to-play title is set to stay a success for a long time.
