Some more technical fans have even experimented with hardware modification, adding new features and breathing new life into older consoles.
The Game Boy has traditionally been a popular console for modification, with many paying tribute to some of Nintendo’s most iconic franchises. Custom Game Boy consoles have seen fans giving the device a new coat of paint with creative designs likeKirby sucking up the Game Boy’s color. Other fans have experimented with adding critical functions like a backlight to the original Game Boy and even adding a high-quality lens to the Game Boy Camera. Now, one fan’s Game Boy mod has smashed the classic handheld together with one of its successors for a two-screen Game Boy-DS hybrid.

TikTok user jrob0021 showed off the creation combining facets of the original Game Boy,Game Boy Advance SP, and Nintendo DS in a video posted earlier this week. The custom console takes the shell of the original Game Boy and adds on the flip screen of the Game Boy Advance SP, all while running as a Nintendo DS. The device features custom casing with a translucent gray case replacing the console’s original exterior. The custom Game Boy also features a pair of buttons added to the front of the console, as well as back buttons to replace the DS' L and R buttons.
This would not be the first time fans have looked to combine the two beloved Nintendo consoles. Many fans have looked to create similarhardware combinations of the Game Boy and DS, combining the popular dual screens of the DS with the Game Boy’s form factor. Both the Nintendo DS and original Game Boy stand as some of the most popular consoles of all time, with each sitting as the second and third best-selling console, respectively.
While Nintendo has since moved on from both the Game Boy and DS lines, the two consoles' massive popularity have heavily influenced the developer’s trajectory as a company. Nintendo has historically seen the most success in reaching the handheld market with its most recent home console in the Switch fully embracing the handheld model. The developer even crossed a major milestone earlier this year thatNintendo’s total handheld sales passing 500 million. The Game Boy and DS remain among gaming’s most iconic consoles to this day with fans continuing to innovate on the classic handhelds.
