It’s not exactly a newBack to the Future, but a new car from the DeLorean Motor Company is as good news as any fan of the franchise can get nowadays, with the impending revival of one of history’s most iconic vehicles taking a definitive trip to an electric future.

The Alpha 5 electric vehicle (EV) is the latest product from DeLorean Motors Reimagined LLC, the actual name of the company that took over the brand of the defunct DMC that manufactured Dr. Emmet Brown’s signature ride from 1981 to 1982, and also the new business’ first vehicle made from scratch. That is because for decades the new Texas-based DMC has mainly dedicated itself to offering servicing, restoration, and sale of replacement parts for the cult classic that is the DeLorean, long afterBack to the Future 3came out, something bound to change with its rebrand as a full-on EV manufacturer.

Enter the 2022’s DeLorean, actually named the Alpha 5 electric vehicle but sporting the same gull-wing style doors that made theBack to the Futurecar so famous during the ’80s. It also has a new electric motor that can go from 0 to 60mph in 2.99 seconds and reach a top speed of 155mph, according to The Verge. To enter the electric car revolution, the new DeLorean sports a 100kWh battery that gives the vehicle a range of approximately 300 miles before needing a recharge, all wrapped up in a modern silhouette crafted by DMC and Italdesign, the same firm that helped conceive the original 1981 DMC-12.

While DeLoreans are not the only cars with Falcon style doors, with classics such as the Mercedes 300SL Coupe or a modern competitor like Tesla Model X also sharing this cool feature, it is by far the most famous, meaning DeLorean could have timed the market well by releasing this new model in the wake of a growing market for EVs being put out by all manufacturers. Unsurprisingly, the new DeLorean took less time to get here than the impossibleBack to the Future 4, although fans will be happy tosee Christopher Lloyd inThe Mandalorianseason 3.

Suffice to say, car enthusiasts might want to be wary of shelling out on a brand new DeLorean too early, as the original DMC-12 was notoriously unreliable and an absolute failure for the company, long before Michael J. Fox helped boost its popularity with thefinishing touches ofBack to the Futuredesigner Ron Cobb.
