While players and Bungie are busycelebrating the 30th anniversary of the star-studded developerand its vaunted history, some can’t help but think about what’s next. ForDestiny 2players, the Witch Queen expansion is looming ever closer and the promise of a showdown with Savathun has many excited.
Although the initial teaser released earlier this year could have sufficed, Bungie has partnered withThe Game Awardsto release a new trailer forDestiny 2: The Witch Queen. In it, players can see the first mission for the game, as narrated by a live action Guardian and Eris Morn. The trailer recaps the events that lead into players' first encounter with a Hive Guardian.

The trailer also features some glimpses of the Guardians seemingly enteringSavathun’s Throne World, which is one of the new destinations forDestiny 2in the Witch Queen expansion. Bungie has touted the Throne World as a new challenge for players to tackle and explore, and the studio suggests there will be a lot of secrets to uncover.
One of the combat centerpieces forDestiny 2: The Witch Queenis thenew Glaive weapon, which combines the powerful melee of a sword with the range of a shotgun. While there is still a lot of mystery surrounding the Glaive, it looks plenty strong for taking on the new foes in Witch Queen. Among them is a new set of Hive who have been imbued with Guardian-like powers complete with their own Supers.
Bungie has suggested that theseHive Guardianswill challenge players more than any basic enemy inDestiny 2 -a promise that surely has fans both excited and intimidated. These enemies are able to wield the Light like the Guardians and they are also capable of using a Ghost to come back to life. Only if players destroy the Hive’s ghost will they be truly defeated. And with the new difficulty options for story missions, it’s possible that these Hive Guardians will give players a lot more trouble than they are looking for.
Much likeDestiny 1’s Taken King featured a fearsome foe and a lot of new systems, The Witch Queen features the eponymous Witch Queen, Savathun, as its big bad. For a while now, Savathun has been rumored to be the one behind a lot of machinations within the world ofDestiny 2, like the Dreaming City curse, but only duringSeason of the Losthas she finally revealed herself. Of course, in the current season players are working to help Savathun, while in The Witch Queen they will be working to stop her.
Destiny 2: The Witch Queenreleases July 30, 2025 for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
