Summary
TheDexteruniverse is officially expanding with filming underway on the prequel spin-off series calledDexter: Original Sin. The series will follow Dexter Morgan as an intern in the forensics department at Miami Metro. He’ll be surrounded by a string of familiar faces from the original series, butthe show will also introduce new characters, with Reno Wilson set to play a character called Bobby Watt.The prequel will need to add more new characters to create brand-new stories to merge with the returning characters' arcs.
Patrick Gibson will play Dexter Morgan, with Christian Slater taking on the role of Dexter’s adoptive father, Harry Morgan, and Molly Brown as the F-bomb-prone, Debra Morgan. Also joining the series are Christina Milian as Maria LaGuerta, James Martinez as Angel Batista and Alex Shimizu as Vince Masuka. The prequel series' debut season will have 10 episodes, withDexterandDexter: New Bloodshowrunner, Clyde Phillips, back on board.

The character of Bobby Watt is a detective in the new prequel series,Dexter: Original Sin.He will be Harry Morgan’s partner and will act as a confidant to the legendary creator of Dexter’s kill code. Not much more is known about the character, but it’ll be interesting to see what exactly Harry Morgan confided in him about, and if he gave any hints of what he was dealing with in terms of Dexter’s urges.
Reno Wilson will play Bobby Watt.An experienced actor who has had a long career in television and movies, Wilson’s breakthrough role was the character Howard in 10 episodes ofThe Cosby Showin the late 1980s. He followed it up with guest starring roles in shows likeThe Fresh Prince of Bel Air, If Not For You,andCybill.It wasn’t until 2010 that Wilson landed a regular role on television, playing Officer Carl McMillan inMike & Molly,which ran until 2016. Wilson’s next big role was a regular stint onGood Girls, playing Stan Hill between 2018-2021. Wilson was last seen in the short-lived Paramount+ television version ofFatal Attraction.
Dexter: Original Sin Needs More New Characters
Filming is underway onDexter’s prequel series. Sixcharacters from the originalDexterseries are confirmed to return, with new actors portraying younger versions. However, Bobby Watt is the only new character confirmed to be joining the cast of the prequel series.
This could be a case of the creative team behindDexter: Original Sinchoosing to keep brand-new characters under wraps until the show is released. But, if the plan is to focus primarily on existing characters in the Dexter universe, it could be a bad sign for the prospects of the new show.A spin-off prequel needs new characters to add stakes, because the audience already knows what happened to the characters from the original series.
Better Call Saul,for example, is one of the best spin-off series of all time. Its success was largely down to the creation of brand-new characters like Kim Wexler, Nacho Varga, and Howard Hamlin playing alongside legacy characters like Saul Goodman, Mike Ehrmantraut and Gus Fring.
What Happened to the Characters in The First Dexter Series?
Dexter and Debra Morgan
After Dexter gets his revenge on Oliver Saxon for killing Debra, he takes his beloved sister’s body out of the hospital and onto his boat. He drops her in the ocean and drives off into the oncoming hurricane, faking his own death.
The original series ends with Dexter working as a lumberjack in an unspecified location. However, he reappears nearly 10 years later inDexter: New Blood. He is living in the fictional town of Iron Lake, when his son, Harrison, tracks him down. After discovering Dexter’s serial killing past, Harrison shoots him dead.
Harry Morgan
Harry Morgan was already dead before the events ofDextertook place, committing suicide by overdosing on his heart medication after witnessing the true extent of Dexter’s dark passenger. For years, it was covered up as heart failure, but the truth came out during the originalDexterseries, when Dexter confronted his father’s old friend, Chief Tom Matthews.
Maria LaGuerta
Many people discovered Dexter Morgan’s secret, and paid the ultimate price. One of the saddest deaths in the originalDexterseries was when Marias LaGuerta figured out Dexter was the Bay Harbor Butcher, and Debra was forced to make a choice between killing her brother and her boss.
Angel Batista
Angel Batista was set to leave Miami Metro behind inDexterseason 7, but he decided to stay on after the death of his ex-wife, Maria LaGuerta, and ended up becoming Lieutenant during the events of season 8. Batista reappears inDexter: New Bloodand it is revealed he is now the captain of Miami Metro.
Vince Masuka
Vince Masuka is the most consistent character in the originalDexterseries. His job remains the same, and his sick humor and famous dirty laugh feature throughout. He is one of the few characters who experiences a happy ending, as he discovers he is a father to a grown-up daughter, and survives the events of season 8.
