Summary
Final Fantasy 16was a big gamble for the storied franchise. The game featured an action combat system and eschewed many of the series' staples, most notably the traditional party system. These decisions have madeFinal Fantasy 16a controversial but ultimately successful entry in the series.FF16’s success can also be attributed to the fact that it shipped with a complete story, asFinal Fantasy 15required fans to watch trailers, a movie, and play DLCs to get the full experience.FF13had multiple sequels. The self-contained nature ofFinal Fantasy 16made it easier to engage with, and easier to walk away from feeling satisfied.
Despite there being no need for additional content to finish what it started,Final Fantasy 16is getting DLC. The news of more content forFinal Fantasy 16is sure to please fans, as though the narrative ofFF16is self-contained, the world of Valisthea and even the game’s extended cast still have stories to tell. Because the game was focused so intensely on its protagonist, Clive, there are plenty of gaps in other characters' tales. Additionally, the world of Valisthea is ripe for further exploration.Final Fantasy 16builds a rich lore for itself, reaching across generations. Between the lost civilizations, the absence of certain Mother Crystals, and more, plenty of stories are left to tell.
Leviathan The Lost Is The Most Obvious DLC Topic
Eikons dominateFinal Fantasy 16’sworld. The game sees Clive collecting their powers to battle Ultima, but one Eikon and its Dominant are nowhere to be found.Leviathan The Losthasn’t surfaced in generations, but given how the Eikons work, there must be a Dominant out there somewhere. If there isn’t, then that in and of itself is a huge mystery to be solved. The importance of Eikons in Valisthea and to the game’s story makes uncovering the Dominant of Leviathan or whatever happened to the creature an obvious choice for DLC. The DLC could either have Clive hunt down the Eikon’s master or work as a spin-off, placing the players in the shoes of Leviathan’s Dominant.
The Sins of Dzemekys Could Be Covered in the Game’s DLC
Another topic ofFinal Fantasy 16’s DLC could be hidden in its world-building as well. When first approaching Dhalmekia in pursuit ofTitan’s Dominant, the player encounters a massive crater on the border between the land and the sea. This crater was born from an event known as “The Sins of Dzemekys” in which humanity tried to topple the gods. It has been theorized that Leviathan might have fallen during this event. Regardless, “The Sins of Dzemekys” would be both an action-packed and lore-intensive story to tell if included in DLC. Like Leviathan The Lost, this crater and its origin seems like an obvious topic to cover.
Final Fantasy 16’s Extended Cast Could Get Some Love in DLC
One of the biggest letdowns ofFinal Fantasy 16was the lackluster treatment ofJill Warrickand other members of the extended cast. Jill is woefully under-developed and exists largely to support Clive. In spite of this, we learn she spent years in servitude, and there are plenty of times she splits away from Clive to achieve different goals. Jill would be a perfect character to play as in a DLC. Similarly, Cid is under-utilized, and a DLC could be made focusing on his founding of the Hideaway and how he brought together the survivors there.
Final Fantasy 16 Has Plenty of Gaps to Fill in its Story
Dion, and to an even greater extent Joshua, are also perfect candidates to star in a DLC. Dion arises in the game’s third act as an unexpected hero, and Joshua spends over a decade in hiding, trying to learn of Ultima and the threats facing Valisthea while remaining in the shadows himself. A prequel DLC could follow some of Joshua’s adventures in the time between his childhood and his reunion with Jill and Clive. Making these other characters playable, if only in DLC, could be one solution for dealing with complaints aboutFinal Fantasy 16’s party system.
