Switch fans have been waiting a while to get their hands on the next game in this series.Fire Emblem: Three Houseswas a 2019 release, and now, four years later,Fire Emblem Engagehas arrived. In many ways, it feels like a regression of the series but in a good way.

Sombron in Fire Emblem Engage

It dials things back a bit and focuses on the tactical gameplay rather than cramming three campaigns under one roof with tons of character choices. It was a good fix for the series to go back to simpler values, but there are things aboutFire Emblem Engagethat are less progressive. Hopefully, these minor issues can be addressed in patches.

8Remove Subtitles

The cutscenes inFire Emblem Engageare some of the most impressive anRPG on the Switchhas seen in a while. However, the inability to turn subtitles off can be distracting. A subtitle button is almost always in the menu for options, but it is missing here. This seems like an easy thing for the developers to patch in.

Also, when players hit the Plus button on the Switch during a cutscene, the game should pause and ask if players wish to skip instead of doing it automatically.

7Add A Jump

A jump button would make exploring The Somniel so much more convenient. The ability to fast-travel anywhere in the castle is great, but so would the ability to jump around and take shortcuts. It’s silly to think that Alear can slay dragons in battle but cannot hop over a tiny garden wall. If a jump button would be too complicated to program now, the developers could instead implement a vault button.

Not every RPGcan be as platform-heavy asKingdom Hearts, butFire Emblem Engagewould certainly benefit from either of these suggestions.

6Add A Photo Mode

Nintendo has added one of the coolest photo modes into their games viaSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate. This is a game that features a plethora ofFire Emblemcharacters, from old-schoolheroes like Marthto newer ones like Byleth. Being able to capture the action as it happens in a match is great.

Unfortunately,Fire Emblem Engagedoesn’t have that same luxury, but it should during combat situations. There is a way to take photos at The Somniel, but these portraits are made exclusively for the online profile cards, and this feature isn’t the same as having a pure photo mode.

5Heal Others With Items

There are a few ways to heal in the game. The best way is through the mage-like classes that can use healing magic like Framme, who doubles as a martial arts fighter.

It’s recommended that all characters carry a set of Vulneraries with them, which act like potions in other RPGs. It’s odd that characters cannot use a Vulnerary to heal a party member like one can do inother tactical RPGslikeFinal Fantasy Tactics. Adding this ability to heal others with items would be a huge help in battle.

4Full Autobattle

The inclusion of an autobattle mode in any turn-based RPG is a godlike mechanic. This game includes this option but it is a basic setup. Every round, players have to choose whether or not they want that round performed automatically or not.Another tactical RPG,Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny, allows for full automation until the battle is over.

Players can cancel autobattle at any time if they so choose in that game.Fire Emblem Engageshould have these options as well, along with more options as to how individual units perform during the autobattle phase.

3Make Skirmishes Easier

There is a way to fight extra battles outside of the storyand Paralogue chaptersin the game. Skirmishes will appear randomly, which act like random battles in other RPGs. What the game doesn’t explain is how they appear beside the idea of randomnesses. It’s quite easy to exploitFire Emblem Engageto get as many Skirmishes to appear as possible.

The world map in Fire Emblem Engage

All players have to do is manually move the clock up in the Switch’s internal clock. It’s an easy cheat to figure out, but certainly, the developers could make Skirmishes less obtuse in the first place. For example, a patch could fix the randomness and have at least one Skirmish appear on the map after every battle.

2Streamline Busywork

There is a lot of busywork in the game that could be streamlined for the player. For example, after every battle, players get to run around the map in 3D to pick up items. These shiny objects also appear at The Somniel after every battle. With so many party members at their disposal, couldn’t Alear task someone to grab these items instead? It would be a neat idea to give tasks to party members at headquarters from picking up the aforementioned items to training.

1Revamp The Menu System

The menu system in theFire Emblemserieshas always been bad, and this game doesn’t help things. Characters have a select number of slots on their person, and all other items go to a group menu in the caravan. This can be accessed during battle if a character approaches Alear if they wish to switch weapons or grab more Vulneraries, for example. It would be more convenient if all players could access the caravan at all times. This is only a small suggestion, as the menu system overall needs a big overhaul, and hopefully, the next game will change things more drastically.

Fire Emblem Engagewas released on June 02, 2025, and is available on Switch.
