ThePokemonbattling system contains 18 different elemental types, all of that come with their strengths and weaknesses. Some are more powerful than others, and somePokemontypes can even nullify attacks from certain types, such as Normal versus Ghost types, and vice-versa.
The battle chart can be quite exhausting at times to memorize all the different levels of effectiveness, and it only became more complicated withthe additions of Fairy and Dark types in later generations. One of the Pokemon types that suffer most from super-effective attacks is the Grass-type, which is coincidentally one of the starting Pokemon types of each generation.

Unfortunately, Grass-type Pokemon suffer from five weaknesses — Bug, Fire, Flying, Ice, and Poison — tying them for the most weaknesses along with Rock-type Pokemon. Reddit user alzanrico highlights this disadvantage with a popular meme from the Pokemon animated series, wheremain protagonist Ash Ketchumwalks into a building, only to be met by five residents with guns in their hands. The five residents represent each type that holds a super-effective advantage over Grass-type Pokemon, while Ash represents those who are on the receiving end. With how many Grass-type Pokemon there are in the game, including the starters players can choose from, it’s quite fascinating to see just how hard it can be to enter the Pokemon world as a trainer that prioritizes Pokemon of that variety.
The only other type that suffers the same fate is Rock-type Pokemon, which are weak against Fighting, Ground, Steel, Water, and Grass. The advantages that Grass-type Pokemon have is in their move pool and their defensive-minded nature. Grass-type Pokemon have a wide range of healing moves, from attacks like Mega Drain and Giga Drain to Synthesis, a heal-only move that recovers half of the Pokemon’s maximum HP, or one-quarter if there is a weather effect in play. Luckily, there is a wide range ofGrass-type Pokemon with secondary typings, such as the Bulbasaur line, which adopts the Poison-type, or the Lotad line, which takes in a secondary typing of Water.
Grass-type Pokemon are also defensive tanks and often used as stalwarts with their insane defense and HP stats. For instance,a Tangrowth packs a base defensive stat of 125and is packed with moves like Giga Drain, Poison Powder, and Ingrain, making it a pain to deal with. It can strictly stay in any battle, chip away at the opposing Pokemon’s health with poison damage, while recovering any lost HP with its absorption-based attacks. While Grass-type Pokemon tend to suffer from more weaknesses than any other type, a proper strategy and planning ahead can make them quite the optimal type to play with during a run.
