Of course, the characters in these video games are also pretty engaging in their own right, forming the base for narratives to unfold in certain story-heavy titles. That being said, these video game villains mainly exist for their plans to be thwarted, with the stupidest villains of the lot being mentioned below.
10Bowser (Super Mario)
Bowser is one of the most iconic video game villains of all time. He’s also one of the stupidest, with his plans being thwarted by Mario time and time again.
Given that Bowser is the face of a platforming series that doesn’t veer into anything too mature, it’s easy to see why this villain is so incompetent. In fact, this is a recurring trope that will be seen in several other games on this list.
9Dr. Robotnik (Sonic The Hedgehog)
Dr. Robotnik isanother iconic video game antagonistwho is featured in theSonic the Hedgehogseries. Also known by the moniker of Eggman, this villain has been consistent in his attempts to get the Chaos Emeralds across each mainline game.
So, it’s almost impressive that Robotnik fails in these attempts time and time again. It takes a special level of incompetence to concoct such inane and fallible plans time and time again, after all.
8Dr. Neo Cortex (Crash Bandicoot)
Another protagonist from a beloved classic platforming series that has consistently failed to make his plans a success isDr. Neo Cortex fromCrash Bandicoot. The eponymous character has been able to foil the plans of his nemesis time and time again.

Crash himself isn’t the brightest person around, with the character outright helping Dr. Cortex at certain points in the games. This is perhaps why this antagonist is even more inept, since he still can’t accomplish his nefarious goals even after getting an unfair advantage.
7Dr. Wily (Mega Man)
Another inept antagonist from platforming games isDr. Wily from theMega Manseries. Out of all the other platformers discussed on this list,Mega Manmight’ve faded away the most in terms of popularity… but that still doesn’t take away from the legendary nature of this series.
Most of Dr. Wily’s plans are hopelessly complicated and never come to fruition anyway. This was perhaps a necessity, since this villain couldn’t be made to look too incompetent in such a title.
6Wheatley (Portal 2)
Portal 2is one of the greatest games of all time. The personality of this game absolutely oozes from every pore, with Wheatley being a great addition to this game.
In a way,GLaDOS could’ve made this list as well, but it has to be said that this AI is way more competent than Wheatley. The latter might’ve taken over the systems of Aperture expertly, but everything he does later seem more comedic than thought-out.
5Sephiroth (Final Fantasy 7)
Sephiroth isone of the most iconic video game villains of all time. However, while this villain is pretty great in his own right, it has to be said that his plan to destroy the Planet should’ve succeeded, given the tools at his disposal.

Instead, not only is he chucked (by an injured Cloud} into the Lifestream, but he also fails to carry out his plan even after merging with JENOVA and the planet’s essence itself! While this makes for a great finale, it also turns Sephiroth into a completely incompetent villain as well.
4Flowey (Undertale)
Undertaleis one of the greatest indie titles of all time. The game is absolutely brimming with charm, especially as a result of its amazing characters… including the evil antagonist, Flowey.
The game wastes no time in showing just how despicable this character is… although he’s fairly incompetent as well. While he serves asthe big bad in the neutral playthrough, the Pacifist or Genocide playthroughs reveal just how useless this villain really is in the grand scheme of things.
3Abby (The Last Of Us Part 2)
The Last of Us Part 2is considered by many fans to be a disappointing sequel, mainly because of the decline in the narrative’s quality. Characters don’t act as they should, and their motivations are pretty much up in the air.
Abby is a great example of this — her character could’ve been something truly special, but her poor decision-making leads to her own undoing. For someone who had no issues with carrying out some truly heinous actions, it’s just odd to see her give Ellie the benefit of the doubt so many times.
2Pagan Min (Far Cry 4)
Far Cryis a series that is notable for its highly charismatic and engaging villains.Far Cry 4is no exception to this golden rule, with Pagan Min serving as a great antagonist whose performance is fueled by the brilliance of Troy Baker.

However, this villain also performs some rather quizzical actions throughout the game. These instances include leaving the protagonist on their own at the start of the adventure and trusting them to not blow him up at the end of the game.
1Any Uncharted Villain (Uncharted)
Unchartedis one of the most cinematic video game experiences anyone can subject themselves to. That being said, its villains are rather cookie-cutter and don’t really do themselves any favors throughout the series.
Eddy Raja, Zoran Lazarevic, Katherine Marlowe, and Rafe Adler all had opportunities where they could do away with Nathan Drake and his company for good. However, these villains always failed to stop their opposition in their tracks, leading to their demise by the end of their respective games.
