It’s almost a guarantee thatGrand Theft Auto 6is going to be one of the biggest games of this, or any, generation. It just needs to come out first. WithRockstar Games having gone on a hiring spree, it looks as though development is starting to ramp up for the long-awaited follow-up to 2013’sGTA5. It’s still not clear exactly when the next installment will come out, but it has been suggested that it’s been in the works for quite some time.
That’s according to Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, who says thatGrand Theft Auto 6has been in development “in some form” since 2014. If true, this means the studio started working on it just one year afterGTA5hit the shelves. Schreier doesn’t go into any more detail than that, so it’s difficult to know precisely what is meant by “development” in this context. It could indicate that it was in pre-production and has been for years, but anything outside what the report says will likely just be speculation. However, it does seem as though some designers in the Edinburgh branch of Rockstar allegedly quit, owing to a “lack of progress.”

The rumor mills are hotting up around the game, especially as there’s been discussion about the possibility ofGrand Theft Auto 6having a female protagonist, as well as some details about the setting, which some believe could be a new rendition of Vice City. Of course, it goes without saying that these are just rumors, and however reliable the sources may be, it’s best to hold judgment until word from the developer or another officially associated party makes an announcement.
After years of leaks and hopes,Rockstar finally confirmed thatGrand Theft Auto 6is in developmentearlier this year. There is still little known about this next entry, but it has been suggested that it could release somewhere between 2023 and 2024. That leaves quite a wide launch window open, but as the months go by, there will hopefully be more concrete information about what is becoming one of the most hyped up sequels of all time.
WithThe Elder Scrolls 6allegedly still in pre-production, Bethesda announcingFallout 5, and Ubisoft recently cancelling four games, fans are having to do a lot of waiting at the moment. Despite the immense success ofGTA5andGTA Online, many are now feeling it’s time to move onto the next game, and hopefully it will live up to all this hype.
