The bittersweet moment for Rockstar was accompanied by a tweet that reads “Our trailer has leaked, so please watch the real thing on YouTube.“This is not the first time Rockstar has suffered leaks, of which the most publicized occurred in September 2022 following a severe hack. 90 videos of in-development footage forGrand Theft Auto 6began surfacing online, revealing details that are now known to be true, such as a return to Vice City and the first female protagonist since the series went 3D. Rockstar developers and others involved in the production ofGTA 6have taken to social media to express their dismay that so much marketing work and build up was effectively wasted, a special moment taken away from them. However, it will hopefully be a small consolation that the trailer they worked on for years is effectively breaking the internet.

Having just passed 60 million views in only half a day, the trailer is already the second most watched video on the Rockstar YouTube channel, pushingRed Dead Redemption 2’s third trailer down into third place with a comparatively measly 37 million views. The trailer forGrand Theft Auto 5holds the top spot with 97 million, but that 12-year dominance will be in jeopardy if the sequel continues its trajectory.
It is difficult to appreciate just how successful and popular theGrand Theft Autoseries is,especiallyGTA 5,which has single-handedly sold 190 million units as of September 30.The Witcher 3: Wild Huntwas released less than two years afterGTA 5and is one of the most celebrated narrative roleplaying games, but only surpassed 50 million units in May 2023. But fans are still in for a bit of a wait. The trailer stopped short of announcing a specific release date, instead claiming thatGTA 6would arrive in 2025. BothGTA 5andRed Dead Redemption 2did not release on PC for more than a year after they first came to consoles.
