Summary
Hades 2deserves its flowers for already having so much content to share in its early access phase, but those who have played through it know that it’s still unfinished. The most obvious omissions are some character avatars, which are either rough sketches or have a hooded figure as their placeholders. OneHades 2character that players find entertaining is Narcissus, who currently has a placeholder avatar.
Narcissus is acharacter in Greek mythologywho didn’t love anyone, but suddenly fell in love with himself after Nemesis lured him into a pool, where he would stare at his reflection until he died. InHades 2, he can be found talking to his reflection in Oceanus, and he’s aptly portrayed as a narcissistic person who claims that he’s a popular, handsome man whom Melinoe should know about. With Narcissus' official character design still a mystery, many fans have interesting suggestions and theories on what it could look like.
Hades 2 Fans Want Supergiant Games to Hide Narcissus' Face
According to Greek mythology, Narcissus is an attractive hunter who is noticed by women and men alike, including the mountain nymph Echo, but is also quite apathetic about the emotions of others. After Narcissus rejected the feelings of Echo and many others,Nemesis, the God of Retribution, enacted a curse that eventually caused the self-centered man to fall in love with his reflection. Narcissus would later die next to the pool, leaving behind a gold and white narcissus flower.
An ongoing theory within theHades 2community is that it would be perfect if Narcissus was actually faceless, and that Supergiant Games should either retain the hooded placeholder figure or do a similar faceless design for his official avatar. Many fans think it’s only fitting that the man who thinks highly of his appearance would not be allowed to show his face to everyone he meets. This would add a new layer to the curse that Nemesis placed on him, as he would be the only one who could see his appearance while boasting toHades 2protagonist Melinoe.
Of course, there’s always a possibility that Supergiant Games will still whip up an attractive avatar for Narcissus, especially to make the character design somewhat accurate to Greek mythology. However, the developer has also taken creative liberties when portraying Greek gods and other important figures to give them unique appearances in theHadesfranchise. If Supergiant Games is closely listening to fan sentiments, it might decide to turn the faceless theory into reality.
Hades 2’s Echo Could Play a Role in Revealing Narcissus' True Face
Assuming thatHades 2fans wouldn’t be able to see Narcissus' face throughout the majority of their run, what the game could do is give Echo an important role in lifting Nemesis' curse on Narcissus, but also have him show his true face. It has been hinted inHades 2early accessthat Melinoe could reunite Narcissus and Echo, who can be found in the Fields of Mourning after becoming heartbroken.
Just likeOrpheus and Eurydice, and Achilles and Patroclus in the firstHadesgame, Narcissus and Echo’s reunion could change their disposition and improve their dynamic further. Although there might be no guarantee that Narcissus would outgrow his self-centeredness,Hades 2could write him as someone capable of changing for the better with the help of Melinoe’s influence and Echo’s love. Perhaps as Narcissus learns to be more empathetic and less boastful about his physical qualities,Hades 2fans will be given the chance to see his face as a normal human being, and not just as a well-known being whose narcissism and curse defined his life.
