The upcoming sequel toEnola Holmesjust got a little more familiar thanks to yet another returning star. The follow-up to Netflix’s 2020 smash hit mystery film (that is to say the film’s genre is “mystery,” not that details about a movie released a year ago are somehow still unknown) looks ready to recapture the hearts and intellects of audiences everywhere, and it will do so thanks to more than a few returning friends, including Helena Bonham Carter.
Bonham Carter, who played the mother of Millie Bobby Brown’s Enola andHenry Cavill’s Sherlock Holmes himself, will reprise her role from last year’s charming riff on the classic detective stories.Enola Holmessaw Carter’s character, Eudoria Holmes, at the center of a mystery when she suddenly disappeared from the teenage Enola’s life without warning. But thanks to the wit and cleverness she instilled into her daughter, she only remained missing for roughly the duration of one feature-length movie.

Carterwill join Brown and Cavill, who had already signed on for theEnola Holmessequel at the time of its announcement. Louis Partridge’s Tewksbury, the little rich kid who found himself at the center of his own family conspiracy, will also return in the upcoming film. Aside from these lovable faces from the first movie,Enola Holmes 2will also feature Susan Wokoma, David Thewlis, Adeel Akhtar, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Abbie Hern, Hannah Dodd, Gabriel Tierney, and Serrana Su-Ling Bliss. It’s currently unknown whether Sam Claflin will reprise his own role as Sherlock and Enola’s rather less cuddly brother, Mycroft.
This is yet another widely praised role in Carter’s career, which reaches all the way back to the ’80s. From projects like 1999’sFight Clubto 2007’sSweeney Toddand beyond, her range is undeniable. Many fans would be hard-pressed to realize that the actress who played the Shakespearian Ophelia in 1990’sHamletis the same one who terrorized children and audiences alike asVoldemort’s buddy Bellatrix Lestrangein theHarry Potterfilms. Carter’s character inEnola Holmesis certainly more subdued than many of her famous roles from the past, but she also holds plenty of secrets just below the surface, which feels like a perfect fit.
Enola Holmesitself was based on the book series of the same name by Nancy Springer, and the sequel appears to be following that same trend. As the younger sister of the famous detective Sherlock Holmes, the story of Enola isa tale of empowerment aimed at young womenwhile also still providing a satisfying and enjoyable experience for those who are outside of its target audience.
That’s not to say it’s got a particularly exclusive demographic. In fact,Enola Holmesappeals to pretty much everybody. So here’s hoping the next film keeps that trend going when it finally begins filming. A sequel is afoot.
