One of the biggest strengths ofHelldivers 2is just how many different layers of progression there are in the game. From the get-go, players have access to an extensive Warbond that offers new weapons, new armor sets, and a wealth of new equipment, giving players plenty of incentivizes to complete Major Orders and earn medals. Players also have access to a range of different Stratagems, requiring players to reach a certain rank and spend a different kind of currency to unlock. And finally, there areHelldivers 2’s Ship Modules.
Though they’re not quite as immediately gratifying as the other forms of progression inHelldivers 2, Ship Modules do play an important role in the live-service game’s core loop, particularly when the player reaches the higher ranks. These Ship Modules grant the player special bonuses and stat boosts during combat, such as reducing the cooldowns of support weapons and increasing the blast radius of explosive Stratagems. But gameplay isn’t the only thing that’s affected byHelldivers 2’s Ship Modules; they could end up paving the way for a feature fans have wanted for a while now.

Ever since its initial launch back in February, fans have wanted some sort of ship customization feature to come toHelldivers 2. But what some fans didn’t realize for a while is that there actually is a subtle form of ship customization already present inHelldivers 2.It’s just tied to the Ship Module upgrade system.Helldivers 2’s Ship Modules are split into six categories, each one associated with a different area of the ship. Each of these six categories now has five tiers as ofthe latestHelldivers 2update, which need to be purchased in a linear sequence.
Upgrading each Ship Module inHelldivers 2will slightly alter that area’s appearance. For instance,upgrading the ship’s Orbital Cannonswill increase the number of guns visible on the front of the player’s destroyer, while upgrading the ship’s Hangar will add more personnel to the area and more weaponry. Many of these cosmetic Ship Module changes are quite subtle, adding just one or two more minor details to the area, but once the player notices them, the changes help to fuel the game’s sense of progression.
Helldivers 2 Should Take This Customization to The Next Level
WhileHelldivers 2’s Ship Modules offer a neat layer ofship customization, it’s a far cry from the type of customization that fans really want. But rather than offer a completely separate, more extensive ship customization feature,Helldivers 2should continue to build on what’s already there. The next stepHelldivers 2needs to take is giving players more customization options for each Ship Module.
For instance, players should be given the ability to decorate the area surrounding their ship’s Patriotic Administration Center, adorning its columns with unlocked flags and emblems. Additionally, players should be given the opportunity to customize the exterior of their destroyer, adding emblems and decals to its body, and changing the color of its central stripe. These cosmetic changes wouldn’t affectHelldivers 2’s gameplay, but they would help to make the player’s ship feel more like their own.
