WhileHogwarts Legacyis available on both next-gen consoles, recent tests conducted by Digital Foundry revealed that the game runs better on PlayStation 5 than it does on Xbox Series X. In theirHogwarts Legacytech review video, they found out that the game was “very shaky” in the performance mode on the Xbox Series X, while the 60 FPS was “nearly locked” on the PlayStation 5 version. The biggest drop in FPS seems to appear when the main character goes from indoor to outdoor, which happens quite often as players travel in and out of Hogwarts and the nearby villages to complete their quests.
Besides the performance mode, thegraphical options ofHogwarts Legacyoffer various alternatives allowing players to set their desired settings to display a higher-fidelity rendering mode featuring ray tracing or choosing a more balanced option. Among those settings is Fidelity, which is a high-fidelity rendering mode favoring resolution and graphical quality over a high frame rate. If the PlayStation 5 seems to be better than the Xbox Series X when it comes to frame rates, the overall graphical quality ofHogwarts Legacyis similar on both platforms.
The reason behind the drop in frame rates when players switch from indoors to outdoors inHogwarts Legacyon Xbox Series X compared to PlayStation 5 might come from the console’s hardware. While the Xbox Series X has more power than its direct competitor, the PlayStation 5 comes with a custom SSD allowing the console to run games faster and preventing the frame rates from dropping unexpectedly. Avalanche Software announced that an upcomingHogwarts Legacypatch will help improve performance on both Xbox and PC.
Hogwarts Legacyis out now for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S with PS4 and Xbox One versions coming April 4 and a Nintendo Switch port dropping July 25.
