Summary

CD Projekt Red’s originalWitchertrilogy is an interesting set of games. While it’s certainly an awkward game to play nowadays, the firstWitchergamewas incredibly impressive for the time, especially as it was CD Projekt Red’s first development project. The Witcher 2received a great deal of praise as well, but it wasn’t untilThe Witcher 3that the series found worldwide success, and in the eight years that have followed, fans have been desperately pleading for CD Projekt Red to return to the fantasy universe.

Back in March 2022, fans finally got their wish. CD Projekt Red announced thata newWitchersagawas on the horizon, with another trilogy leading the charge. At the time, CD Projekt Red gave fans practically nothing to go on, that is aside from one now-infamous image of a never-before-seen Witcher medallion lying in the snow. How The Witcher 4’s Lynx Medallion Could Set Up The New Saga

A Witcher’s medallion is an incredibly important aspect of their identity. As well as being a useful tool for detecting the presence of magic, a Witcher’s medallion also signifies which school they attended. IntheWitcherbooksthat the games are based on, there are seven confirmed Witcher schools, each one based on a different animal, and each one with a unique fighting style based on said animal. During the course of theWitcherbook and video game series, Geralt – who’s part of the Wolf school – runs into several Witchers from across the Continent, some of whom hold different medallions.

InThe Witcher 4’s promotional art, a cat-shaped medallion can be seen covered in snow. This image could be referring to the Witcher School of the Cat, which has a fairly extensive history in the currentWitcheruniverse. Unlikeother Witcher schools, those who belonged to the School of the Cat readily embroiled themselves in government politics, essentially becoming assassins-for-hire and spies for any royalty that was willing to pay. But after various betrayals from both monarchs and fellow Witcher schools, the School of the Cat was left decimated, which seems to still be the case by the time ofThe Witcher 3.

The Witcher 4’s medallion could suggest that the School of the Cat makes a return, either as the heroes of the saga, or potentially as the villains. However, the leading theory at the minute is that the School of the Cat isn’t involved with the newWitchersaga at all, since CDPR has confirmed that the medallion isn’t just of any cat, but a lynx. When compared side by side, the School of the Cat’s medallion looks completely different from the one shown onThe Witcher 4’s promotional art, which brings up a whole new set of theories.

Many fans believe that this lynx Witcher medallion actually refers to Ciri, and suggests that she’ll be the one taking over the reins of the franchise. In theWitcherbooks, Ciri claims a Cat school medallion from Leo Bonhart, and she’s seen wearing it inThe Witcher 3. Though the medallion looks different from the one on the poster, some fans believe that it could imply thatCiri is starting her own Witcher school, the School of the Lynx, and the newWitchersaga will revolve around her becoming a mentor figure.
