Studio Ghibli has been very active in 2022, and things don’t look to be slowing down any time soon. With a theme parkset to open this fall, one would think they were too busy to worry about anything else. But on the contrary, a new exhibition with Toshio Suzuki has opened in Tokyo with a lot of different things for fans to see and experience.
Studio Ghibliis internationally famous for its animated movies, which have been releasing for nearly 40 years now. Studio Ghibli has done regular collaborations with Toshio Suzuki, the producer behind some of the studio’s biggest films. Toshio Suzuki was the force behindNausicaä of the Valley of the Windfirst being published as a manga, and then later as a film. He was also on the production committee forKiki’s Delivery Service,Howl’s Moving Castle, Studio Ghibli’s first 3D filmEarwig and the Witch, and more.

This most recent collaboration is not in the form of a new movie, though, but rather an exhibition space for fans to experience and celebrate Suzuki’s incredible career as a producer. The exhibition actually ran once before at Kanda Myojin Shrine back in 2019, and has returned now with more to see than ever. It takes fans on a journey through Suzuki’s career from childhood to now, with a special emphasis on his work with Studio Ghibli.
The exhibition begins with a replica of the room that Suzuki grew up in in the 1950s, a small 4-and-a-half mat tatami room taking you back in time. It also showcases a lot of his work with Studio Ghibli with statues and photo opportunities, especially with characters from one of the most popular moviesSpirited Away. There are over 8000 books, manga, and films there as well that Suzuki either worked on or was inspired by throughout his career.
A special feature for the exhibition this time is a replica of one of the bathhouse fromSpirited Away. Everyone can explore this area of the exhibit, and for an additional charge (and advanced registration) fans can soak their feet in a foot bath that looks like its right from the movie. It also comes with a souvenir towel, so you don’t have to spend the rest of your day with wet socks.
No special exhibition would be complete without a store ofexclusive goods, and this one does not disappoint. All the merchandise is classy and traditionally Japanese in style, different from usual anime and otaku goods. Just a few things for sale include sake glass sets, traditional fans, chopstick rests, and even bath salts just like those inSpirited Away.
Tickets to the exhibition cost ¥1800 (around $15 USD) for adults for general admission or ¥2600 (around $23USD) including the foot bath and towel. The exhibition is already very popular, so buying tickets in advance is recommended.
