Not only is it seemingly planning to conclude itsMarvel’s Spider-Mansaga with a two-part game, but it will also be releasing a spin-off focused on Venom before that point.Marvel’s Wolverineis coming along nicely, and fans now know that it will seemingly lead into a hugeX-Mengame around 2030. While there are very few details to dive into about this game, it is possible to speculate about what it could accomplish.
Marvelfans have been quick to discuss the potential roster for this X-Men game, suggesting that underrated gems like Magik as well as fan favorites like Gambit be present on the team. However, while delivering a good X-Men game that features a roster of beloved characters will undoubtedly be the top priority for Insomniac, the game can accomplish more than that. Not only can Insomniac’s X-Men be a pseudo-sequel forMarvel’s Wolverine, but it could be used to set up a wide range of X-Men spin-offs.
Insomniac’s X-Men Likely Won’t Be Just an X-Men Game
Wolverine and the X-Men is a Logical Next Step For Insomniac’s Logan
While Wolverine has had a number of standout runs, ranging from Clairemont and Miller’s brief stint that took Logan to Japan to Greg Rucka’s standout run, Jason Aaron’s work on Logan was a lot of fun. Not only did it contain an entertainingteam-up adventure with Spider-Manthat Insomniac could pull from in a crossover game, but it also featured a healthy mix of grounded stories likeAdamantium Menand over-the-top tales likeWolverine Goes to Hell. Beyond that, though, Aaron had the bold idea of making Logan the headmaster of a new Mutant school filled with lesser-known characters like Idie, Broo, and Kid Omega. With staff like Iceman, Kitty Pryde, and Storm assisting him, plenty of fun scenarios followed after his school was founded.
While some aspects ofWolverine and the X-Menwould need to change, such as theAvengers vs. X-Mentie-ins and the roster of Mutants Logan is teaching, as Insomniac would surely want to feature some bigger names, having him immediately thrust into a high-up teaching position within the X-Men game has potential. WithJean Grey having leaked forMarvel’s Wolverinealready, it can be assumed that she will recruit him to come teach at Charles Xavier’s school. Alternatively, he could start up his own school with Jean, immediately setting Insomniac’s X-Men apart by having a new Headmaster instead of the usual figurehead Xavier. Seeing Logan out of his element as a teacher would be good fun, but watching him struggle to run a school may turn out to be even better. Either way, the X-Men game could do double duty as a half-sequel forMarvel’s Wolverine, featuring him heavily.
Based on the manyMarvel’s Wolverineleaks from the end of 2023, it seems like the game could end up covering the majority of Logan’s life. If Insomniac does successfully provide a highlight reel of Logan’s entire superhero life, traditionalsequels likeMarvel’s Spider-Manmay not be needed.
X-Men Spin-Offs Would Be Right Up Insomniac’s Alley
Not only could the X-Men game essentially serve as a sequel of sorts forMarvel’s Wolverine, but it could be used as a jumping off point for several other Mutant spin-offs. After all,X-Men games will be exclusive to PlayStationuntil 2035, and it is hard to imagine Insomniac and Sony not making the most of that deal. After X-Men releases in 2030, Insomniac could start to release spin-offs in the following year, getting two or three solo Mutant adventures out before the PlayStation deal expires. With this in mind, certain characters could be set up for more stories during the X-Men game, with lingering plot threads left and some post credits scenes used to build up to these solo outings.
