A new trailer for the upcomingHBO MaxseriesPeacemakerhas dropped, along with a fancy new poster shared by director James Gunn. The series, which is a spin-off of Gunn’s 2021 filmThe Suicide Squad, debuts on the streaming platform early next year, and based on this new trailer, it’ll start the new year off with a bang.
TheHBO Maxtrailer opens with Peacemaker (John Cena) fleeing from what looks like two police officers, who describe him as a “trained killer” and a “maniac.” He then ducks into a getaway car, holding the door open for his poorly named avian sidekick, Eagly. We then see Peacemakerreuniting with his father (Robert Patrick), something that was teased in the previous trailer. Predictably, this mass murderer doesn’t have the best relationship with his dad, who even mocks him for getting shot during the events ofThe Suicide Squad.

ThePeacemakertrailer then introduces us to a characterappropriately named Vigilante(Freddie Stroma), another masked “hero” and a member of Peacemaker’s new team. Cena’s Peacemaker tells him that he works for the government now, killing designated targets who are later referred to as “Butterflies. The trailer continues as Peacemaker and his new team wreaks havoc on their enemies with Motley Crew playing over the action. However, things take a turn when Peacemaker is told to take out a target, along with his children, but he refuses.
Despite the character’s comic book origins dating back to the 1960s, Peacemaker hasn’t appeared in a live-action film or television show untilGunn’sThe Suicide Squad. In the film, Peacemaker is one of several members of Task Force X assigned to a dangerous mission in South America. During the events of the film, Peacemaker betrays the other members of Task Force X and kills their leader Rick Flagg (Joel Kinnaman) in an attempt to cover up a government conspiracy.
Even thoughPeacemaker was portrayed as a villainin Gunn’s film, the show seems to be going out of its way to portray him as a more sympathetic and tragic character. Whether or not Peacemaker will be able to achieve any meaningful redemption with his new team is difficult to say, but regardless, the series looks like it’s is going to be a blast when it premieres early next year.
