Part five ofJoJotook a small sidestep to recount the adventure of Giorno Giovanna. The son of Dio, but while he had Jonathan’s body, meaning by some strange workings of biology, Giorno is also a Joestar. Like all the other Joestars, Giorno had a villain he needed to face before moving on with his life. His was Diavolo, and his stand was King Crimson.

King Crimson has one of the most potent and confusing stands in theJoJoUniverse. Not only does King Crimsonhave time-warping abilities, but it would also seem that this stand has a second stand as well called Epitaph. With its powers, Diavolo was almost able to defeat the entirety of the Squadra Guardie del Corpo. But what are King Crimson’s actual abilities?

Two in One

When it comes to Diavolvo and his stand, it’s important to remember that Doppio isn’t a completely different person. They are just different personalities sharing a body, so for King Crimson and Epitaph, they are typically the same stand, just with different abilities. However, some fans like to differentiate the two as King Crimson being Diavolo’s stand and Epitaph being Doppio’s stand to make understanding everything easier.

With that said, it can be a little challenging to understand what this stand can do. In short, with Epitaph, King Crimson and see ten seconds into the future and then erase it. So how does he do this? Epitaph is capable of seeing 10 seconds into the future, and whatever he sees will happen. It’s fated to.Once King Crimson knows what will happen, he can erase those 10 seconds; now, whatever the effect is from those 10 seconds will still occur. For example, when Bruno threw a punch at Diavolo, the movement of the punch disappeared, but the follow-through still happened.

During those 10 seconds, King Crimson, and Diavolo, can move freely but can’t affect anything. It’s sort of like he’s in a pocket looking on at what’s happening. During this time, he can move behind his opponent and be strict as soon as the time is up. The person who lost the ten minutes will remember nothing, and King Crimson will have successfully attacked his opponent. Keep in mind that just because King Crimson removed those ten seconds doesn’t mean he’s altered the outcome or changed anything.

Whatever was supposed to happen will end up happening. It’s just that King Crimson moves during the 10 seconds he erases. This means that if he sees himself throwing something in his vision, that will still happen even if Diavolo isn’t there to do it. That meansa random rock could betossed, and Diavolo never touched it.

Knowing the Unavoidable

During the events of part five, Diavolo demonstrates how powerful his stand’s abilities can be. When fighting with Bruno, Diavolo could easily avoid Bruno’s attacks by erasing 10 seconds and appearing behind him to strike. He also uses this when taking to Trish from Bruno in the elevator. Diavolo erases time by successfully avoiding Bruno and taking Trish to avoid a fight with Bruno. This does mean that Diavolo was always going to enter the elevator, take Trish’s hand off and carry her away. That’s one thing Diavolo can’t avoid. The future is set in stone.

So, even with all of that power, what good is it to know something unavoidable? Diavolo, in the end, was defeatedby Giorno and his stand, Golden Experience Requiem. No matter what Diavolo did, he was always destined to be defeated, meaning everything he did was for nothing. Perhaps this is part of the reason why he was so secretive. Besides keeping the face of Passione a secret, perhaps Diavolo was worried about the future. By keeping himself outside the events of the world, the only thing he’d have to worry about is stubbing his toe in his mansion. Of course, in the end, Diavolo had no choice but to fall to Giorno and his stand; it was fated after all.

The concept offate does lead toan interesting question regardingJoJo’stimeline. Everything that has happened so far inJoJocan be pointed back to it being fated. What does this mean for the ending of Stone Ocean? Is Joleyne’s ending fated? Those who are familiar with the manga know how sad part six’s ending is, but perhaps Araki has something up his sleeve. Does all of this need to happen for the last Joestar to fix fate and the timelines. This isn’t likely since it’s a new timeline and a new universe in part seven, but who knows. Fans might get to see a fantasticending to one of the most bizarre series.
