TheMortal Kombatfranchise has added countless iconic movie characters to its game over the years, but if Keanu Reeves had a say, two of his most iconic characters would not join the Tournament.

Keanu Reeves recently sat down with Esquire Magazine’s video series “Explain This” where he answered fan-submitted questions. One of the questions asked Keanu if he had a say in the addition of Neo, John Wick, or both into theMortal KombatUniverse, would he allow it? The question was a reference to a 2019 story whereMortal KombatDirector Ed Boon teased aJohn Wick DLC addition toMortal Kombat 11. His answer was a surprisingly firm “No.”

Reeves is quoted as saying “If it was up to me? No.Mortal Kombatis awesome in so many ways, but I think… you know, Neo, John Wick, they’re doing their own thing.Mortal Kombatis doing their own thing.” His reasoning behind the answer seemingly stems from high respect for theMortal Kombatgames. Either character would be an appropriate addition to theMortal Kombatroster as the game already hosts Rambo, Robocop, The Terminator, and so many more action movie icons.

John Wick has already appeared in video games as a player skin inFortniteand has his own game, the action-strategy gameJohn Wick Hex.Neo made appearances in movie tie-in games during the heyday of theMatrix Trilogyand rumors suggest thatFortnitecould get its ownMatrixcrossover eventahead of the release ofThe Matrix Resurrections.

Keanu Reeves was a central character inCyberpunk 2077playing Johnny Silverhands, a game that crosses over some themes ofThe Matrixandhigh-octane action like theJohn Wick movies. So it’s not as if he is opposed to any more video game appearances. Just if it were up to him, it sounds like he’d rather the characters stand on their own in their respective mediums.

The parent companies of either franchise (Lionsgate forJohn Wick, WarnerBros forThe Matrix) would be the ones that give NetherRealm the “OK” to introduce either character to the game. The studio has announced that they haveofficially wrapped production onMortal Kombat 11and have moved on to the next game, so any Neo or John Wick additions would be inMortal Kombat 12.It’s a shame that if either character ever does show up in theMortal Kombat, it would be against the wishes of Keanu Reeves.
