Summary
In an announcement at the Gamescom convention in Cologne, Germany, developer Illfonic has confirmed that it will co-develop and publishKiller Klowns from Outer Space: The Game, an upcoming multiplayer horror game. Another company, Good Shepherd Entertainment, was originally set to publish thegame, which is based on the 1988cult classic horror filmKiller Klowns from Outer Space, though they are now handing the project off.
When the project was first announced at last year’s Gamescom, many fans wereskeptical about the adaptation ofKiller Klowns, of all franchises, into a video game. Even so, subsequent trailers and announcements about the developing title have garnered significant excitement, as the game has been revealed to be a 3 vs 7 asymmetrical survival horror experience, akin to titles likeFriday the 13th: The GameorDead by Daylight.

In an announcement to the press at Gamescom, it was revealed that publishing and co-development of this upcoming title has been turned over to Illfonic, a studio which has released several games similar toKiller Klowns, includingFriday the 13th: The Game,Predator: Hunting GroundsandGhostbusters: Spirits Unleashed. In addition tocontinuously developingGhostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, Illfonic has also supported development on a number of major games likeCrysis 3andEvolveto name a few. Now, it appears that the studio will now be addingKiller Klowns from Outer Spaceto its ever growing list.
Speaking at Gamescom, Illfonic CEO and co-founder Charles Brungardt expressed his excitement to be involved with this new project. He said that he and his colleagues have been excited to get involved withKiller Klowns from Outer Space,an IP they are longtime fans of, and that the team at former publisher Good Shepherd Games have “made the handoff process of this project enjoyable.” Brungardt said he wants to create an experience that the community of horror fans can “truly immerse themselves in,” a goal which goes hand in hand with the previous developers' commitment tostaying true to the originalKiller Klownsmoviewith their adaptation.
Given that asymmetric horror games based on classic 1980s film franchises seem to be Illfonic’s preferred niche, given how many such titles the studio has worked on, fans who were looking forward toKiller Klowns from Outer Spacewill likely be reassured by news of the company’s involvement. While no launch date has been announced, and the game’s website still lists a release window of “early 2023” which has arguably passed, development is evidently in progress, and players can stillto get an early taste of the game.
Killer Klowns From Outer Space: The Gameis coming soon for PC, Playstation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
