Daredevil: Born Againhas been spearheading the hopes held by the contingent of fans that yearn for the return of Netflix’s Marvel shows, and one of the biggest stars of the franchise has reiterated her willingness to make those desires come true.
Daredevil: Born Againcame as a cumulation of years of fan yearning after the cancelation of theDaredevilNetflix series saw that version of the character (portrayed by Charlie Cox) left in limbo along with the rest of theDefenderslineup. The series, which was named after what is arguablyFrank Miller’s most iconic and poignant comic storyline, was celebrated on its own merits but also signaled the potential return of so many more parts of Netflix’s interconnected franchise, most notably the stars of other shows likeLuke Cage, Iron FistandJessica Jones.
Whilea new Iron Fist is set to join the MCU with a few major changes, fans have still heard nothing about the potential return of fan-favorite Krysten Ritter, who portrayed Jessica Jones both in her won eponymously named series and in crossover projects with other Netflix Marvel stars such asThe Defenders,which also prominently featured Cox’s Daredevil and more. Speaking toThe Hollywood Reporterrecently in an interview about her new spinoff showOrphan Black: Echoes, Ritter revealed that she was quite enthused by the idea of returning to the now-iconic role, as well as reiterating what the character means to her.
I am ready and I would, of course, be there in a heartbeat. She’s a character who I absolutely love, and she was a part of my life for so long, So if the opportunity calls, I may or may not have an extra jacket already. Fingers crossed, you never know. But that would be exciting, of course.
While they were demonstrably unrelated at the time of airing, all of the Netflix Marvel shows were made with the MCU in mind, deftly avoiding any potential contradictions or needless overlap. With the recent acceptance of those projects into the fold,Jessica Jonesis now an official part of the MCU canon, despiteMarvel Studios seemingly relegating Netflix’s Marvel shows to non-canon statusearlier in the news cycle. With that in mind, it seems almost a waste to not let Ritter return to the role that she elevated almost beyond the level of her contemporaries within the franchise. Fans have been just as eager for her return as they were for Cox’s Daredevil to put the mask on again beforeBorn Againwas announced.
Ritter’s response makes it clear that she hasn’t been made privy to any plans for a return anytime soon, but that might not be the red flag it seems at first glance. Withthe aggressive rework toDaredevil: Born Againthat saw several firings hitting the reset button, it’s likely that the powers that be at Marvel Studios are incentivized to take things slow as it relates to integrating the other Netflix shows. The success or failure ofBorn Again, as well as all the lessons learned along the way, will certainly be pivotal in deciding the future for Ritter’s character and the rest of the gang from Netflix’s Marvel slate.
All told, Ritter’s character easily tops the list ofthings the MCU should keep from its Netflix showsgoing forward both from the perspective of narrative potential and fan demand. Until Cox’s grand return to the Marvel scene plays out, though, fans might have to take a rain check on seeing Jessica Jones in the MCU.
