The performance of the Meta Quest 2 is getting a bit better, courtesy of a new update releasing for thevirtual reality headset. The update comes as a surprise, but it may help to provide a boost to certain resource-heavy games and applications.

The Meta Quest 2 is the latest Quest-line virtual reality headset from Meta/Facebook, though it’s a couple years old at this point. The headset allows players to enjoy virtual reality games and apps without being tethered to a computer, while also providing the flexibility of letting users connect to a PC if they want improved capabilities for modern VRgames likeHalf-Life: Alyx.

Now, a new update for theMeta Quest 2is boosting the system’s capabilities a bit. The new update changes the maximum GPU clock frequency from 490 MHz to 525 MHz. The Quest 2 has an inherently flexible GPU clock frequency, allowing low-resource applications to use less battery while providing a boost when the system is utilizing something more resource intensive. By increasing the max clock speed, apps and games that require a lot of processing power should run a bit more smoothly.

The update is likely a welcome one, and quite painless to get. While someMeta Quest updatesroll out gradually to users, this one seems to be available simultaneously and will be applied on its own, without the need for any major headaches on the part of the user. However, there does seem to be an issue with the update, as the new maximum GPU speed doesn’t work properly upon starting up an app. At the moment, users can give their Quest 2 the boost by starting the application, taking off the headset, and then putting it back on. According to Meta, this issue will be amended with the v49 system update, but as it’s currently running on v47, there’s no telling when this update will arrive.

Meta has been able to make some improvements to its virtual reality headsets in the form of updates in the past. In fact, the ability to connect a Quest headset to a PC wasn’t originally part of the Oculus Quest’s capabilities, and was instead added in an update after its release. Fans who buy these headsets are likely pleased to see their device continue to improve without the need to buy a new one regularly. However, with theMeta Quest 3on the horizon, this may be one of the last major tweaks to the Meta Quest 2.
