Obsidian Entertainment’s hotly anticipated fantasy RPGAvowedrecently debuted an extended look at its gameplay during Xbox’s Developer Direct in January. The footage largelyfocused onAvowed’s combat, exploration, and quest dialogue, but the game’s beautiful cover art was unveiled as well. Sporting an eggshell backdrop,Avowed’s cover prominently features a ghastly skeleton in armor and a red cape, wielding a sword. Elements of oceanic nature, coral, seaweed, tree branches, leaves, and the like, cover the skeleton’s body. ConsideringAvowed’s reveal of one of its main regions, Shatterscarp, is of aquatic properties, the theme of the cover art seems fitting. Since its reveal,Avowed’s cover has been the subject of much praise, so much so that Xbox has already released a free dynamic background of the cover for Xbox users in anticipation of the RPG.
Call of Dutyhas recently revealed a new operator skinthat looks similar to the skeleton inAvowed’s cover art. Called the Abberration Ultra bundle, the pack’s crown jewel is the Truffle skin for Byline, which features a skeleton overgrown with coral and seaweed, strikingly similar toAvowed’s cover skeleton. The bundle also includes weapon blueprints for an LMG and handgun, both with visual patterns referencing elements of Byline’s Truffle skin.
In motion,Call of Duty’s Abberration Ultra Truffle skin really does look likeAvowed’s skeleton come to life. The pink and blue colored coral growing by the right side of each skeleton’s head is perhaps the most striking similarity. However, they do both have key differences and elements that the other doesn’t have. If one looks closely atAvowed’s cover, they can spot a cluster of coral in the skeleton’s stomach cavity that loosely resembles the structure of a medieval building. On the other hand,Call of Duty’s skin has transparent arms with visible sparkling golden veins. Additionally,Avowed’s skeleton is wearing pieces of knight’s armor, while the Truffle skeleton is decked out inCall of Dutymilitary gear.
When Is Avowed Coming Out?
Avowedis currently slated for Fall 2024, but a specific date has yet to be confirmed. Obsidian fans, and fans of fantasy RPGs in general, should expect the title’s firm date to be revealed atXbox’s confirmed June showcase, which is happening as part of the upcoming Summer Game Fest.
