While playingNier Automata, players will come across a handful of merchants they can purchase items from. The currency in the game comes in the form of Gold, simply referred to as G. Gs are in abundance inNier Automata, especially if players take the time to do and complete side quests.

That doesn’t mean players should still waste Gs. There are a lot of items, powerful weapons, and materials in the game that are worth buying. This is what players should save their Gs for. This also means there are items in the game players shouldn’t bother purchasing as they can be easily obtained elsewhere, or they’re simply not worth the Gs at all.
7Non-HP Recovery Consumables
Most of the merchantsinNier Automatasell consumables. This includes health recovery items, status cures, and consumables that give the player temporary buffs. It is highly recommended that the players save their Gs for the health recovery items. Better yet, they should save it for Large and Full Recovery consumables.
The players won’t have trouble stumbling across consumables as they play throughNier Automata, which makes buying them a waste of Gs. Status effects also rarely happen in the game, and whenever they do, they’re rarely detrimental to the gameplay.
6HUD Chips
There are merchants in thismodern JRPGthat sell chips that are strictly for altering the heads-up display. Aside from a few unique ones such as HUD: Sound Waves and HUD: Fishing Spots, players already begin the game with every HUD Chip they’ll need. These can be turned off as well by unequipping them, which makes HUD chips ultimately preferential.

Considering all of that, it’s unnecessary and a waste of Gs to purchase HUD Chips. HUD: Sound Waves and HUD: Fishing Spots are situationally useful, but players can do without them. However, if they want to try them out, they’re free to as long as they have enough Gs to spare. Otherwise, there are so many more items in the game that deserve their hard-earned Gs.
5Low-Level Common Chips
Players should avoid buying the low-level common chips some merchants are selling. The chips players will see that are sold by certain merchants are from base level to +2. These chips can easily be obtained by doing quests and defeating enemies. These low-level common chips include Weapon Attack Up, Ranged Attack Up, Melee Defense, and Range Defense, among a few others.
The rule players need to think about here is that if they have an abundance of low-level chips in their inventory from exploring and doing quests, they shouldn’t bother purchasing them from merchants at all. This can be a need some players will have if they’re thinking about fusing chips. They should just farm for them instead which shouldn’t take much time.
4Taunt Up
Taunt Up is aplug-in chipthat’s not as common as others such as Weapon Attack Up and Melee Defense. This may urge some players into purchasing them from merchants. However, this isn’t recommended for one very specific reason: the Taunt Up plug-in chip doesn’t stack. Players will only really need one to three of these, which they can acquire by simply playing the game naturally.
Players will receive a Taunt Up plug-in chip by completing the Lord of the Valley side quest in the Forest Zone. It can also be farmed from the Medium Flyers in the desert. With this chip, players are able to taunt enemies, which raises the player’s damage but also raises the enemies' damage.
3Thick Dictionary
The Thick Dictionary is a required crafting material to upgrade two of the three Pods, which makesPod Programsmore powerful. This is the only use for this crafting material, aside from being sold to merchants for 5,000 Gs. All in all, players need six Thick Dictionaries only to fully upgrade the two Pods that need it.
This crafting material can be acquired by completing the Heritage of the Pastside questor as random loot from the Desert area. It can also be farmed from Small Bipeds, a very common enemy in the game. This is the best way to acquire six Thick Dictionaries in the game. Certain merchants, on the other hand, can sell them for a whopping 10,000 Gs. That’s a huge amount for a resource that players can farm from a very common enemy.
2Common Crafting Materials
There are a ton of crafting materials inNier Automatathat players can farm from enemies which are easily found and defeated. Players can also purchase these common crafting materials from merchants. These materials include Amber, Copper Ore, Crushed Nut, Dented Plate, Iron Ore, and more.

Instead of buying these crafting materials, players can easily farm them by seeking out the enemies that drop them. These enemies are as common as these resources. Defeating them is easy as well. On top of that, players get more other materials while farming, such as Gs and exp, which makes this process more worthwhile.
1Death Rattle
The Death Rattle is a hacking chip that players can purchase from Devola and Popola. It costs 5,000 Gs, and it serves one purpose only. This chip makes machines cry out loud if they’re killed via hacking. There are three reasons why players shouldn’t bother buying this chip. For one, it has no bonus from a combat point of view. Second, it’s a waste of plug-in slots. Finally, it’s a waste of Gs.
Players who may find enjoyment in hearing machines emitting death cries upon death may find this chip appealing. However, not many people carry this sentiment. Players should simply save their Gs for something else.
