A fan of theElder Scrolls IV: Oblivionstumbled across a unique discovery when they found a structure that strongly resembles the game’s wayshrines. Though it may not offer the same boons as the ones found inOblivion, it’s certainly an interesting find.

The wayshrines in Oblivion dot the landscape all across the map and are devoted to the Imperial pantheon called the Nine Divines, also known as the Eight and One. The Nine Divines can also refer to one ofthe many factions inOblivion, this particular group is devoted to worshiping the pantheon. When approached in-game, the shrines provide both healing to the player character and a buff that’s distinct depending on which of the nine that particular shrine is devoted to.

Not content just to visit the shrines in the game, one fan has found their way to what looks like a real-world wayshrine, nearly identical to those found across Cyrodiil. Reddit user plaid_dragon_boi caught sight of the structure in a city park and, noting the striking similarity to those populating thehuge open world ofOblivion, snapped a picture of it. The formation appears to be made of pale stone. In addition, it has pillars encircling it and what looks like some kind of offering bowel at the center. These are all features shared with theOblivionwayshrines. It’s worth noting that it’s only semicircular as opposed to those found in the game, which are fully circular, aside from the crumbling ones.

Many of the comments on the post made mention of how striking the image looked, some thinking at first that they were seeing a screenshot of aheavily modded version ofOblivion’s wayshrines. But plaid_dragon_boi explained that they added a few filters to the image, attempting to give the impression that it was indeed from the game. Commenters praised their subtle artistic touch, noting, in particular, the effect applied to the light and how well it resembled video game lighting effects fromOblivion’s era.

One commenter said they thought they were looking at a screen capture of thehighly anticipatedElder Scrolls 6. With buzz continuing to build over the upcoming game, many fans still seem to bear a lot of fondness for the series' earlier entries, evident not only in this post but in the ongoing modding community surroundingOblivionand other games in the franchise. If many still carry a torch for a game as old as this one, it can only be a good sign for the 6th entry.

However, TheElder Scrolls 6has had a long road, asSkyrimwas released over a decade ago now, and high expectations can have a detrimental effect on both players and developers. Here’s hoping fans one day get the game they’ve been hoping for.

Oblivionis currently available on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.
