The historical biopic raises several questions about casting and characterization. When an actor is asked to portray a real person who has already been immortalized through archival footage, they take on new risks and challenges. Christopher Nolan’s upcomingOppenheimersets out to capture the unique experience of the theoretical physicist who fathered the atomic bomb. The supporting characters in that story include Leslie Groves, the US Army engineer who oversaw the project.

Nolan’s film is farfrom the first time the Manhattan Project has been depicted on film. Roland Joffé’s 1989 filmFat Man and Little Boycast Paul Newman in the role of Leslie Groves and Dwight Schultz as Oppenheimer. The film was derided for those choices. The casting was the most common complaint of contemporary critics. Perhaps Nolan has found more suitable candidates to bring these historical figures to life.

What isOppenheimerabout?

As the name suggests,Oppenheimerfollows J. Robert Oppenheimeras he works to develop the first nuclear weapon in the Manhattan Project. It’s an epic historical biopic that seems to return to Nolan’s earlier work in psychological dramas. The film is primarily based on Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s 2005 biographyAmerican Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer. The book is said to have captured two sides of Oppenheimer. He was seen as an American hero during the war but took on a different cultural appearance after his inventions served their purpose. The film is set to be as subjective as possible, depicting the world entirely through Oppenheimer’s perspective.Oppenheimer is portrayed by Cillian Murphy, who has appeared in six of Nolan’s films. This will be the first starring role for Murphy in one of Nolan’s features. He will be supported by a tremendous ensemble cast featuring many of the finest actors working today.

Who is Matt Damon playing inOppenheimer?

Matt Damon is portrayingLieutenant General Leslie Groves inOppenheimer. Leslie Richard Groves Jr. was born in Albany, New York, on 22 May 2025. He was the third of four children. His father, Leslie Sr., was a Presbyterian pastor who became a US Army Chaplain only four months after Leslie’s birth. Leslie moved to various Army bases throughout his childhood. He was a decent student who started taking classes at the University of Washington while in high school. Leslie wanted nothing more than to attend West Point. His second attempt at the entrance exam got him into the academy. His time at West Point was cut short by the United States' entry into World War I, but he graduated fourth in his class. His high marks got him a Second Lieutenant’s commission into the Army Corps of Engineers. After sailing through the ranks during World War II, attending to one crisis after another, Leslie Grove was selected by Commanding General Brehon B. Sommervell todirect the Manhattan Project.

Leslie was tasked with finding a director for Project Y, the group of scientists who would develop and build the first atomic bomb. He had a few options to consider. Harold Urey, the discoverer of deuterium, became the head of the SAM Laboratories. Ernest O. Lawrence, the inventor of the cyclotron, manned the Radiation Laboratory. Arthur Compton, who determined the particle behavior of light, controlled the Metallurgical Laboratory. All three men held Nobel Peace Prizes. Unfortunately, they were all already in indispensable positions in the Manhattan Project. Compton recommended the University of California, Berkeley physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer for the job. Oppenheimer was not the obviouscandidate for the Manhattan Project. He didn’t have a Nobel Prize, he had little administrative experience, and many of his closest friends were communists. Groves personally waived the security requirements for Oppenheimer, taking a big risk on an unsure asset. Leslie’s risk paid off, bringing the father of the bomb into the work that would make his career.

Groves is usuallydepicted as a foil to Oppenheimer. The scientist’s inquisitive mind clashes with the soldier’s demand for results. The conflict between the two men reaching for the same goal has some basis in reality since Groves was famously derided for his attitude by Eisenhower, but their back and forth was the main conflict behindFat Man and Little Boy. Groves' role inOppenheimerremains to be seen. He’s in a lot of the footage depicted in the trailers. His close involvement with the Manhattan Project demands his presence. As a casting choice, Matt Damon seems altogether stronger than Paul Newman. The subjective nature of the film is likely to cast Groves in less-than-ideal light. Leslie Groves is a controversial figure. Every person involvedwith the Manhattan Projectworked to solve the same problem, leaving the rest of the world to determine whether they should’ve tried. Just because Groves never had a “Now I am become death” moment doesn’t make him a less compelling character.
