Noob, for example, refers to a newer player at a game or is used as an insult for someone who simply plays badly in a given title. “Git Gud” gained popularity a few years ago and is typicallyassociated with the Soulsborne RPGs, and players who cannot defeat a boss inElden Ring, for example, may be told to merely get better at the game. However, it can be daunting for new gamers to learn all the terms others have been using for so long.
PlayStationis hoping to change that, as it unveils its ultimate list of popular gaming terms. In essence, this is a “gamer dictionary,” which is available now on Sony’s website and gives players access to a ton of abbreviations and words that they might not know the meaning of. It is formatted similar to a dictionary, with words categorized by their letter on the site. Various examples of gaming slang are explained, such as “cheesing,” which refers to a tactic or exploit that reduces the challenge of a game or part of a game. There are also explanations for actual mechanics and gaming hardware in thePlayStationlist of terms, such as AoE, or area of effect damage, and GPU.

A few terms in the dictionary are illustrated, with examples taken from actual games. For the explanation of end-game, Sony uses the example ofDestiny 2being well-known for its end-game play, giving players extra hours of content through things like therecently releasedDestiny 2Witch Queen expansionand PvP multiplayer.
Something that stuck out from the “gamer dictionary” was the mention of backwards compatibility. This term means that a console can run software created initially for previous generations of hardware. Sony referenced that the PS5 could run most PS4 games. However, interestingly it did not mention the fact that soon PS3 games and other titles from older generations of Sony consoles will be playable again thanks to thenew PlayStation Plus Premiumservice.
For those looking to get into gaming properly or for a gamer who’s been pretending to know what a hit box is for years, Sony’s ultimate list of terms may be more than useful. The platform owner also was unafraid to inform gamers of some more toxic terms used in online spaces, something that was interesting to a few fans considering thatPlayStation patented a way to remove toxicity from its chat.
