Fans ofPokemon GOare likely games who loved the originalPokemonseries, with some of them even gunning to complete Generational Pokedexes introduced acrossPokemon GOversions. And for those who want to “catch ‘em all!” for Generation 3, then Clamperl’sGorebyssis definitely a creature worthy of attention. InPokemonLeafGreenandPokemon FireRed, players can evolve this sleeping Pokemon into two (2) variants depending on the tool used, with Gorebyss being acquired with the Deep Sea Scale.

Considering the mechanics ofPokemon GObeing tailored for a mobile augmented reality game, players can expect a unique spin in the acquisition of the fabled eel-like monster. However, for fans of the mobile game, just how could they get Gorebyss in the hit title?
Clamperl In The Original Games
In its first appearance inFireRedandLeafGreen,Clamperlis a Water-Type Pokemon that makes a reference to the giant clam or the oyster. Due to this classification, Clamperl also shares its category with Cloyster and Shellder, with their sub-type being Bivalve Pokemon. Its visual description in the franchise is that of a pinkish ball with a face protected by a fierce shell, making it an ideal “thematic” Pokemon for Water-themedGyms inPokemonandPokemon GO.
Given the existence of its shell, it can use the Move Tutor to learn Iron Defense. However, both Huntail and Gorebyss aren’t able to acquire this Move. Interestingly enough, Clamperl is also the only Pokemon that only evolves via Trading and while holding one of two (2) different materials. It can evolve intoHuntail via the Deep Sea Tooth, while it can becomeGorebyss via the Deep Sea Scale. The Evolution only works when Clamperl with said item is held.
Gorebyss In The Original Games
When Clamperl is Traded to another player while holding a Deep Sea Scale, it evolves intoGorebyss. Once again, Gorebyss has the same Water-Type classification as Clamperl, but this time boasting a completely new appearance.
Seemingly based on both a snipe eel, the oarfish, and the chimaera, Gorebyss retains the pinkish complexion of its main face as Clamperl while extending its body to form a snake-like appearance. It has purple fins and shells to cover its chest area. Interestingly enough, its Water-type classification didn’t seem to hinder its capabilities of learning a Psychic-Type Poke-Assist move inPokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, a trait hinted in its recommended moveset inPokemon GO.
Pokemon GO: What Is Clamperl?
Clamperl made its first appearance inPokemon GOin 2019 during the Clamperl Limited Research event. Similar to its original counterpart, it is a pure Water-Type Pokemon. InPokemon GO, this means Clamperl is weak to Grass and Electric (deals 160-percent damage against it), while has resistance to Fire, Water, Steel, and Ice (only deals 63-percent against it).

In the context of the game, Clamperl boasts an affinity to Water Gun (Water-Type) and Ice Beam (Ice-Type) as its Move Combination. As with other Water-Type Pokemon in the mobile game, thiscombo boasts the highest DPS possible inPokemon GOamong their respective Types, which makes it an effective choice in PVP. Players may want to take note of this moveset preference, as it may carry over once they evolve their Clamperl into Gorebyss.
The Choice: Gorebyss Versus Huntail
Similar to their original counterparts, Clamperls can also evolve into either Huntail and Gorebyss. However, instead of the evolution process being triggered via Trading with a held item,Pokemon GOsimplifies its mechanics by making it dependent on two (2) things: Candies and Luck.
As fans know, Candy is a major requirement when evolving any Pokemon. This requirement is extended towards special mechanics concerning unique Pokemon like Clamperl.
Evolving Into Gorebyss
However, this time around, instead of having “specific” Candies, Clamperl instead makes use of rather common requirements. Having50 Candiesis enough to evolve Clamperl, however players have no idea which Evolution they will acquire.
Moreover, there are no “special” instances wherein odds are bolstered towards acquiring Huntail or Gorebyss. The system is completely randomized, meaning players always have a chance of not having Gorebyss. To make things easier especially for long-termPokemon GOBattle Training, it’s advisable for players to have multiple copies of Clamperl available, alongside a healthy stock of Clamperl Candy.
Pokemon GO: Enter Gorebyss
When players do acquireGorebyss, they do get to possess one of the more unique variants of recommended Pokemon Movesets out there. Granted, both Huntail and Gorebyss retain their respective Water-Type classification. In turn, it shares vulnerabilities with Clamperl towards Grass and Electric-Type Moves (they deal 160-percent more damage) whereas they have resistances against Fire, Ice, Steel, and Water-Type Moves (they deal 63-percent damage against Gorebyss).

However, a unique aspect of Gorebyss is its retention of a trope from the old games, where it’s able to learn Psychic-Type Moves. In fact, in the context of skill selection, Gorebyss is best paired with Water Gun (Water-Type) and Psychic (Psychic-Type), making it its highest-DPS move for both PVE and PVP - which makes the Pokemon appear more awesome once players apply this moveset to itsShiny Pokemon counterpart.
Gorebyss Vs Huntail In Pokemon GO
When it comes to a luck-based Evolution system, one might wonder if Gorebyss is worth the catch compared toHuntail. Interestingly enough, while both Pokemon do share Types, they have drastically-different approaches in combat. Compared to the more versatile Gorebyss, Huntail is built to be more of a frontline attacker.
For instance, its most ideal movesets include Water Gun and Aqua Tail, both Water-Types that boast Huntail’s best-possible DPS opportunities. However, in terms of minute differences, Gorebyss’s Psychic (32.1 DPS) has higher attack power versus Aqua Tail (31.6 DPS), giving the pink eel more of an edge when it comes to long-term combat prowess, especially inPokemon GOPVP Matches.
