Sony’s hard at work on a major firmware update not just for the PlayStation 5, but also for thePlayStation 4. Some may question the necessity of giving thePS4another big firmware update, but not only is the console still used by tens of millions of PlayStation fans across the world, but it could also use an update so it better complements the PS5. Case in point, one new feature being added in the PS4’s 9.00 firmware update finally allows users to check out their PS5 trophies.
It’s a well-known frustrating aspect of the PS4 that any trophy for a PS5 game simply won’t show up as part of the older console’s UI. To be clear, it isn’t justPS5 exclusive gamesthat don’t appear, but rather games that a player started on the PS5. PS4 users that open their trophy information will instead see a blank listing with a note saying “Trophies unavailable.” That’s because the PS5 uses a new format for trophy data that the PS4 doesn’t support.

That’s going to change with the PS4’s 9.00 firmware update, however. Soon PS4 users will be able to see trophy information for games likeDemon’s Souls,Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and PS4 games users are playing on their PS5 via backward compatibility. This includes seeing other users' PS5 game trophies, too, as well as in the console’s trophy comparison menu.
Some may question why this is a necessary feature addition. After all, why doPS5 ownersneed check trophies on PS4? The simple answer is that a lot of PlayStation fans still use both consoles, either because they’re part of families that have different consoles in different rooms or similar issues. There are also a lot of people who haven’t been able to get a PS5, so being able to check friends' trophies is still important.
The 9.00firmware update for PS4won’t be limited to just an update of the console’s trophy recognition, of course. Other features like message group owners deleting messages, prompts to leave a group if users block someone from the group, and also parent account notifications when a child account requests permission to play certain games.
While the PS5 has become Sony’s clear new focus as itsfastest-selling consoleever, it clearly hasn’t moved on entirely from the PS4 yet. The upcoming 9.00 firmware update isn’t massive or attractive, but it shows that Sony plans to continue robustly supporting the platform going forward.
