Ethan Hunt is tasked with the recovery of these keys, but he doesn’t think the IMF or the U.S. should hold all of this power, making him public enemy number one again.Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part Onehas a conclusive ending, but it is only half of the story. Let’s get to the key plot lines left on the table for the sequel to answer in 2024.
Warning: This list contains spoilers!
8The Entity And The Key
AI in reality and popular media is a hot topic right now. That’s why it seems timely that this movie would feature one called The Entity. What does The Entity truly want? Is it going to talk in the sequel in some sort of robotic form akin toUltron in the MCU? Also, what does the key unlock? Gabriel says that he knows, and it was established that Delinger knew as well before he was killed.
The other missing piece of the puzzle is where the submarine sunk. What exactly was the sub’s mission, and does it relate to any big organization outside of the country of Russia?
7Why Did The Entity Choose Gabriel?
Gabriel is a new character to this universe, and it seems like a strange pick. There are other villains still alive that could have made a comeback, like Solomon Lane, who does not die inMission: Impossible - Fallout.
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part Onedoes establish that Gabriel and Ethan have a past, but not a lot is said about that relationship. Is that why The Entity chose Gabriel? Is this even the real Gabriel? After all, why would a human trust in an AI so much, or does Gabriel not trust it at all? Could he be using it for his own means? Gabriel is one giant enigma in the movie, but all should be revealed in the sequel.
6What Is Jasper’s Past With Ethan?
Jasper, the agent that is chasing Ethan throughout the movie, seems to have a past with him too. His partner, Degas, asks if this beef with Ethan is personal, and Jasper’s response is mixed.

What is Jasper hiding? Is he hiding anything at all? Could he be related to another character in the franchise, like maybe one who died? Also, Beef aside, will Jasper and Degas join Ethan and have a change of heart in the sequel?
5Will There Be Returning Cast Members In The Sequel?
WillMission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part Onebe the final movie in the franchise? Splitting it up into two parts sure does make it seem like that is the case, although Tom Cruise has expressed interest in keeping the franchise going. If this is going to be the finale, though, it would be prudent for the series to bring back characters that sort of disappeared.
Where are Jane and Will, who first appeared inMission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol? What about Zhen fromMission: Impossible 3? What about Ethan’s ex-wife Julia? WasMission: Impossible - Fallouther final curtain call?
4Where’d Luther Go?
Luther leaves the film right before the final set piece on the train. He tells Ethan that he has to work remotely and without the internet so that The Entity cannot trace him. Is Luther going to work alone, or will he contact someone wise for help?
This could be an opportunity to bring back some old cast members. Will, who was played by Jeremy Renner, could help Luther by giving him access to a remote location. It could be a callback to howClint, aka Hawkeye, moved out to the country to avoid confrontation in the MCU.
3Is The Syndicate Involved?
Solomon Lane is presumably not the only member of The Syndicate still alive. He may have been the acting commander in past movies, but that doesn’t mean anything. When it comes to this franchise orany spy movie, viewers know that evil organizations are like mythical hydras.

When one head is cut off, another one will sprout up to replace it. Is The Syndicate involved with Gabriel, The Entity, or some other character inMission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One? Could Grace be an undercover agent for The Syndicate? Now that would be a twist for the finale.
2Is Paris Still Alive?
Paris is a villain in the movie who some may recognize as Pom Klementieff. She plays Mantis in theGuardians of the Galaxymovies within the MCU. She doesn’t say much inMission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, but this villain turns into a hero when she saves Ethan from death.
It seems like she died, but when Degas finds her, he says there is a faint pulse. Is Paris going to pull through and join the IMF like Grace does? Also, why did Ethan spare her? He does not answer the question when asked.
1Ethan’s Past
There are small snippets of Ethan’s past with Gabriel in the movie. All viewers know right now is that Gabriel killed someone that Ethan cared about on a mission. The scene shows them in a sewer, and that is it. The sequel could open with this mission to establish the backstory of their relationship. How fun would it be to see a de-aged Tom Cruise run around like he was in the first movie again? If it worked for Harrison Ford inIndiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, then it can work for Tom Cruise too.
