While there are many anime famous in the otaku world, feware quite as famous asSailor Moonis. To celebrate the 30th Anniversary of this beloved anime, a special museum has opened up in Tokyo’s glitzy Roppongi neighborhood .
TheSailor MoonMuseum just opened at the start of July and will remain open for six months.Sailor Moonoriginally ran for five seasons from March 1992 to February 1997. It has 200 episodes and 3 TV specials. Originally the anime was only slated to run for six months, but maintained its prime-time Saturday night TV slot in Japan for five years thanks to its popularity.Sailor Moonwasn’t only big in Japan, though, and aired on TV around the world, earning global recognition and fans.

Because of how massive the series is (and those 200 episodes of anime don’t even include the movies and manga), theSailor MoonMuseum will have three phases of exhibition. The first phase, running July 1st to September 4th, will feature drawings from seasons one and two. The second phase, from September 10th to November 6th, will focus on the third and fourth seasons. Finally, the last phase from November 12th to December 30th will be all about the fifth season.
While there have been countlessSailor Moonart exhibitions and other displays before, none have been as big as this one. TheSailor MoonMuseum has over 600 different things for fans to see. Amongst these arenever before seen, original drawings by creator Naoko Takeuchi, which is enough alone to draw attention.
These are done in color and will change with each phase, some done on the largest scale they have ever been before. But the original drawings aren’t the only special part of theSailor MoonMuseum. There is also a theater described as being a fully immersive experience, and a hologram manuscript exhibition. Even the walls and floors of the museum are decorated using lasers and projections to take fans deep into the world ofthe iconic heroineSailor Moon. Finally, there are costumes and other items that have been created in real life based on exactly how they appear in the anime. This includes all the Sailor Scout uniforms, along with Princess Serenity’s dress andTuxedo Mask’s sparkling suit. They look like props from a live-action movie but have been created just for this museum in reality.
TheSailor MoonMuseum will also include a special shop. The shop is huge, with everything from postcard sets and stationary items to fashion items, LED signs, and make-up bags. There is also a specialSailor Mooncafé serving up beautifully themed food. Some top choices are omelet rice in the shape of a crescent moon, and a parfait layered with all theSailor Scout colors.
Admission to theSailor MoonMuseum costs ¥2,200 (a little under $20USD), which is quite a good price for how much there is to see and experience. Plus since it will change every few months, fans can return at least three times to see everything. It’s a great way for the iconic anime to celebrate its 30th Anniversary.
