Croteam’s silence is over.Serious Sam 4remains on track to release in 2020. Better yet, Croteam is now officially announcing thatSerious Sam 4will launch this August. It’ll be coming to both PC and Google Stadia, with a more specific release date available closer to launch. To celebrate the announcement ofSerious Sam 4’s release window, Croteam’s dropped a new teaser trailer and a few gameplay trailers, too.

TheSerious Sam 4teaser traileris just that. It’s short and fun and doesn’t reveal much of anything. The teaser shows a soldier resting comfortably in a field, when suddenly a wave ofSerious Samvillains charges at him. Just as the soldier falls to the ground believing he has no chance, the enemies run straight by him. They weren’t running at him, they were running away from something else. That’s whenSerious Samhimself crests the hill using a Sirian Werebull as a mount. He chases after the horde, weapons blazing.

It’s a fitting teaser for theSerious Samfranchise. In a normal shooter, represented by the soldier, such a wave of enemies would be overwhelming. InSerious Sam, it’s not even threatening. The horde of Reptiloids, Gnaars, Kamikazes, and Bio-Mechanoids better find some friends if they want a chance againstSerious Sam.

But the trailer isn’t just a thematic presentation, either. It also teases one ofSerious Sam 4’s biggest changes. The Legion System is some new tech thatCroteamhas implemented forSerious Sam 4. According to the devs, the Legion System will allow them to put “an order of magnitude” more than even 10,000 enemies on-screen at a time. “We crank it up to eleven,” says Croteam.

It’s a pretty consistent statement among Croteam, judging from these early trailers, thatSerious Sam 4will mark one of the biggest steps forward for the franchise since theFirst Encounter. Whether it’s enemies, weapons, or simply the scale of battle,Serious Sam 4will deliver exactly what fans of the franchise want next.

Also confirmed, and perhaps the most important feature of all forSerious Samfans, is the return of cooperative play.Serious Samwill feature4-player co-opjust like previous iterations in the franchise. And considering just how big some of theSerious Sam 4levels are, and how many enemies will be spread across them, teams are going to need all four.
