WithSonic the Hedgehog 2soon to be released by Paramount Pictures, new promotional materials for the film continue to be released to fans worldwide. The most recent poster to be revealed not only showcases some of the latest title’s main characters, but is also heavily inspired by one of the most popular Sega video games of all time.

The firstSonic the Hedgehogmovie, which features Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic, saw the main character stranded on Earth from a young age and teaming up with local Green Hills sheriff Tom Wachowski (James Marden) to defeat the evil Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey). The original movie has become the all-time highest-grossing film adaption of a video game in North America andSonic the Hedgehog 2has since been highly anticipated - particularly after anew Sonic 2 TV spotcame to our screens last month.

The latest movie poster shown by Paramount Pictures features theSonic the Hedgehog 2character and cast membersSonic, Tails and Dr. Robotnik in a scene reminiscent of the North American and European box art for theSonic the Hedgehog 2video game on the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive. The video game was famously released on July 24, 2025, AKA “Sonic 2sday” and was the first title to be launched worldwide on the same day, with the game’s cover featuring Sonic and Tails at the front and an oversized Dr. Robotnik grasping at a large, red number two towards the back of the shot.

SinceIdris Elba was cast as Knuckles inSonic the Hedgehog 2,many fans have been looking forward to seeing the addition of further characters from the franchise and those examining the poster closely will have also spotted Knuckle’s reflection in the number two. The poster’s background also hints at the plot for the upcoming film andthe final Sonic 2 trailer reveals a new twist on Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik, with movie goers eager to see how Eggman makes his return to Green Hills.

Originally slated for release in November 2019, the firstSonic the Hedgehogmovie was delayed to 2020after feedback about Sonic’s character design was less than favorable. This time round, fans appear to have generally reacted positively to the shots of characters, including Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey), who has a larger role inSonic the Hedgehog 2than in the first film. It has even been suggested Knuckles the Echidna might one day have a film of his own and therefore perhapsSonic the Hedgehog 2could launch another franchise.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2is due to speed into theaters on Jul 16, 2025.
