Sonic the Hedgehogburst into theaters on Valentine’s Dayand has stolen fans' hearts from the start. The movie was preceded with skepticism, but soon it was one of the highest-grossing video game films to date. Now, Jeff Fowler is talking about his excitement to do more movies, while including characters fans are dying to see. Please note that this article will havespoilersfor theSonic the Hedgehogmovie.
In an interview with USA Today, Fowler said he was more than happy to revisit these characters. “We’d love to do more with theSoniccinematic universe.” With severalproductions shutting down due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, discussion of a film franchise might seem premature. Studio executives are trying to plan preventative measures for when lockdown measures are lifted, but needless to say, the logistics are proving complicated. However, this hasn’t deterred Fowler and his plans for the future.

TheSonicmovie leftplenty of room for the possibility for a sequel, including a brief cameo from Sonic’s favorite sidekick Tails. Audiences went nuts over the cameo, voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessey, and fans expected an announcement for a sequel to already be in the works.Sonicwas at the top of the box office for nearly four weeks straight to everyone’s delight. However, the sequel was never confirmed.
“We would get that question a lot from fans, ‘Is Tails in it? Is Knuckles in it?’ All these fan-favorite characters,” explains Fowler. “We had to do that little fanEaster egg with Tailsand say, ‘We know you love these characters. We will absolutely get to them in future stories if we’re able to.'”
Audiences were also hoping to catch a glimpse of Knuckles in the movie, but Fowler wanted to focus on Sonic and his journey. Although Knuckles didn’t make an appearance in the first film, Fowler did confirm his connection with the Echidna Tribe. The tribe made a brief appearance in the movie and was a nod to fans that Fowler knew what he was doing. Should the sequel officially announce after Stay-At-Home measures have been lifted, it is likely thatKnuckles will make an appearanceif not be a main character for theSonicmovie sequel.
Sonic the Hedgehogis out now on DVD and Blu-Ray and can be rented on most digital platforms.
