Summary
Excitement forThe Batman 2is hotting up, with fans eager to find out who The Dark Knight will be facing off against in the sequel to Matt Reeves' 2022 blockbuster hit. Fans have a long wait ahead ofThe Batman 2’s release date, as it’s currently slated to come out on October 3rd, 2025. This is just under two years away, so there’s plenty time for things to change, and rumors to turn into reality.
Robert Pattinson will be back to play Bruce Wayne/Batman, and the supporting cast from the last movie are likely to join him in the follow-up. There’s also a new HBO Max series which will focus on The Penguin, with Colin Farrell returning as the titular villain, reprising his role fromThe Batman.
The rumor mill is going crazy with speculation on which villains will turn up to wreak havoc in Gotham in the sequel, and the likelihood is that it’ll feature quite a few of Batman’s old foes. The Joker turned up at the end ofThe Batmanin a disturbing scene with The Riddler, and he’d be a good choice to be fleshed out properly, but there’s one particular rumor circulating that a lesser-known villain called Hush might be appearing inThe Batman 2.
The Batman 2 is rumored to feature Hush
Fans of the comic books will be very familiar with one of Batman’s most formidable opponents, Hush. The story goes that a childhood friend of Bruce Wayne called Tommy Elliot, attempts to murder his own parents to inherit their fortune, but the plan is foiled by Bruce Wayne’s father, Thomas Wayne, who saves his mother’s life. This sets the wheels in motion for Tommy’s grudge against the Wayne family. In the comics, Hush’s trauma is summed up in the comics, when he says:
Penniless, broken in body and spirit, I have, at last, come here, to the bridge. The site where my abusive father met his well-deserved end in a car crash I engineered. In the dark water I see the images of my parents, both slain by my hands, both mocking me for the monstrosity I’ve become. And in my delusion, I am a frightened little boy again, desperate for their approval. Willing to die for it.
Tommy grows up and becomes a top neurosurgeon, and his resentment against the Waynes has continued to simmer, leading him to join forces with the Riddler to destroy Bruce Wayne’s life, when he finds out he is Batman. He wraps his face in bandages to keep his identity a secret, and transforms into a criminal mastermind called “Hush” and seeks the ultimate revenge on his old friend.
The Riddlerwas superbly played by Paul Dano inThe Batman, and there is a strong possibility he will feature inThe Batman 2, albeit not as the main adversary, as this would be a repeat of the first movie. The Batman 2could quite feasibly feature Hush as the main antagonist, with the link with the Riddler evident in the comic books, and could tie the two movies together in an overarching narrative. However, if Hush is the main villain inThe Batman 2, this could also create a lot of problems.
The Batman already told a similar story to Hush’s
The main problem with Hush being the main focus ofThe Batman 2is that The Riddler’s story in the first movie is too similar to Hush’s in the way he is seeking revenge on Bruce Wayne for ruining his life. Nobody wants to see a rehash of the first movie, and featuring Hush as the primary villain would face the likelihood of that happening.
However, that is not to say that Hush can’t feature inThe Batman 2, as it would be an interesting sub-plot to see him visiting The Riddler in Arkham Asylum to discuss their hatred of Batman, and potentially be involved in the main villain’s plot to bring The Dark Knight down. It just wouldn’t work to put Hush front and center of the movie. Hush is also not a well-known villain to movie fans, like The Riddler is. Hush would probably need a lead up appearance inThe Batman 2to give him some initial exposure to fans, before potentially taking on the primary antagonist role in a possible third movie.
Having said that, Hush’s story still feels too similar to The Riddler’s to feature as a main villain in this particular iteration of Batman, so he might have to settle for being a secondary villain. Barry Keoghan’s cameo appearance as The Joker at the end ofThe Batmanstrongly suggests he will be the main antagonist in the sequel, but nothing has been confirmed yet. A potential plot could see Hush and The Riddler assist The Joker in whatever dastardly plan he has for Batman, and it’s somethingfans might want to see in the sequel.
There are some very subtle hints in the 2022 movie to suggest Hush will appear inThe Batman 2, as The Riddler says in one of his creepy videos that someone with the last name Elliot was working on a way to uncover Bruce Wayne’s secret. This is interesting, and it has definitely purposefully been put in there to tease the future appearance of Hush inThe Batman 2. Fans will be keeping a close eye on developments leading up tothe release of the sequel in late 2025.
