The Elder Scrolls Online’s world of Tamriel predates the MMO, having existed across various games for nearly three decades. With each installment inThe Elder Scrollsseries, its world deepens with the introduction of new story elements and incredibly deep lore. There are very few franchises that can boast about having a world so varied and culturally diverse that it comes close to mimicking our own. Every year,The Elder Scrolls Onlinecontinues this tradition by adding new and often previously unseen regions.

Just this year, players were introduced to the High Isle DLC, which contained a series of islands only previously mentioned in lore books. Much of the excitement surrounding the game often comes with these yearly releases, such as whenESOsaw a huge boost in the public eye following the release of its major Morrowind expansion. The game’s “next big adventure” is set to be revealed on January 25 as part of Xbox and Bethesda’s Developer_Direct event, and there are plenty of places MMO fans could be interested to see.

Potential Elder Scrolls Online Content for 2023

Developer ZeniMax announcedThe Elder Scrolls Onlinewould move away from its annual content cycleat the end of 2022. For that reason, there is more attention than ever on what new region of Tamriel it intends to bring for the next leg ofESO’s life. Previously, the game has seen many returning regions such as parts of Skyrim and Morrowind. It is possible players could see one of these return with more detail, but the chance of seeing something entirely new shouldn’t be disregarded.

When thinking of stories that could be explored, thehomeland of the Redguard people, Yokuda, comes to mind. The entire continent was said to have sunk into the sea in the first era, along with the race of the Sinistral elves. The Elder Scrolls Onlinecould reveal that not all was lost, while also introducing a new race of elves into the mix.

Another location could be the heartlands of Skyrim: the Whiterun region. As seen with thereturn ofSkyrim’s iconic dragonsand Vvardenfell, ZeniMax is not averse to the piquing players' nostalgia from past games. Whiterun was one of the most memorable regions inThe Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, soESOcould bring back those memories while introducing new gameplay elements such as the long-awaited bard class. It could also explore aspects of Nordic history left untouched by the original game such as Atmora, the homeland of the Nords.

One final location thatThe Elder Scrolls Onlinecould visit is the Telvanni peninsula. The region is home to the Telvanni, a faction of arrogant but powerful dark elves who remain largely uninvolved in most conflicts. Dialogue found throughout the High Isle DLC makes references to the location, so there’s a likely chance it is announced at the Xbox and Bethesda Developer_Direct. This has been done multiple times in the past, such as when Sotha Sil mentioned Summersetthe year that Summerset was announced forESO. This would be in-line with ZeniMax promising the “most requested feature” coming to the game in 2023. The Telvanni are known for their magical aptitude, and players have been asking for a spell-crafting skill since 2014.

One thing is for certain, ZeniMax is not lacking in options for its next region. After thelackluster performance ofThe Elder Scrolls Onlinein 2022, a change of pace may be just what the game needs. With the right region, the game could see an influx of returning players.

The Elder Scrolls Onlineis available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
