Summary

The latest anime live-action remake coming toNetflixisYu Yu Hakusho, which is set to premiere next week. To continue to hype up this already anticipated release, Netflix released a new official trailer for the series. Perhaps even more excitingly, though, the streaming service also released some special videos to YouTube - 12 in total. That brings the total to 13 new videos released this week before the premier ofYu Yu Hakusho, just in time to stir up even more excitement.

The trailer was released on Netflix earlier this week on Tuesday, and the YouTube videos were posted the same day. They can not be found on the Netflix YouTube channel you may normally check; instead, they are on the streaming site’s Japanese channel. This means they may have been missed by some international fans if they are not following both pages. It also means they do not have English subtitles, which shouldn’t stop fans from enjoying the action and in-depth looks at the characters.

The official trailer does, thankfully, have English subtitles, as it was posted on Netflix’s main YouTube page as well as within the app itself. It gives a basic introduction to what the plot of the series will be, showcasing a lot of thesupernatural elementsthat are so important to theYu Yu Hakushostory. It shows just enough to get people intrigued, whether they are fans of the original source material or not. Considering the anime adaption of theYu Yu Hakushomanga aired back in 1992-1995, there is a good chance that the series may be new to many people.

The 12 special trailers that were only posted on the Japanese channel are character features. Each one is less than one minute long, giving a deeper look at 12 of the series' characters. The characters that feature are Keiko Yukimura, Yusuke Urameshi, Kurama, Kazuma Kuwabara, Botan, Hiei, Elder Toguro, Sakyo, Younger Toguro, Genkai, Yukina, and Koenma. This is the biggest look at the characters, and the live-action series for that matter, that anyone has had yet. Again, they are worth checking out even without English subtitles to get a good look at the characters, somegreat action shots, and the series' special effects.

The release ofYu Yu Hakushoas alive-action remake on Netflixfollows the success of theOne Piecelive-action - and the failure ofCowboy Bebop. What setsYu Yu Hakushoapart from both of those titles is that it has been made by Netflix Japan, so its original language is in Japanese. BothOne PieceandCowboy Bebopwere made in English (though a Japanese dub is also available). Having the series in Japanese does link it more closely to the original anime it is based on, and also makes more sense for the story - since it is set in Japan, unlike the other two fantasy titles.

Yu Yu Hakushois being made by Netflix working together withTOHO, one of the top distributorsof media in Japan. They have a multi-year lease working together, andYu Yu Hakushois the first work that Netflix has made using TOHO’s studio. If it is successful, there will very likely be even more Japanese anime adaptations made by Netflix using TOHO in the future, which is something we can look forward to. Hopefully, theYu Yu Hakushopremiere will be worth all the hype.

Yu Yu Hakushowill air on Netflix worldwide June 01, 2025.
