Summary
Ever since 2004’sStar Wars: Battlefront,Star Warsfans have been spending hours fighting their way through their favorite sci-fi galaxy. These games are one of the few that truly makes players feel like they are simple soldiers fighting across dozens of planets, and over the years, the series has only grown. Now, it encompasses four unique experiences, multiple spin-offs, and even a few re-releases likeStar Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection. And while almost all of those have been pretty fun, theStar Wars: Battlefrontbrand might be on its last legs.
Since Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm, it has felt like theStar Wars: Battlefrontseries has struggled to make an impact within the modern gaming landscape. Both EA games fell flat with audiences andthe brand-newStar Wars: Battlefront Classic Collectionhas been marred with controversy. Even though fans are still clamoring for these types of experiences, this subseries has had a bit of a bad streak in recent years, and because of that, it might be time for the franchise to move onto something else entirely.
It May Be Time for Star Wars to Move on From Battlefront
Star Wars: Battlefront Has Struggled in Recent Years
The original twoStar Wars: Battlefronttitlesare often cited as some of the best that the series has to offer. Fans have loved fighting on practically every notable planet in the series, messing around with the most iconic heroes, and even engaging in all sorts of space fighting mayhem. Yet, after 2005’sStar Wars: Battlefront 2, the series had been on hiatus outside a few mobile spin-offs. But that was all set to change after Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012. However, it ultimately proved too good to be true.
In 2015, Dice releasedits own version ofStar Wars: Battlefront. The game was beautiful to look at, and it did deliver that core experience fans wanted, but it was also missing a plethora of features that the past games had. There was no Clone Wars content, it did not have many multiplayer modes, and its season pass model was criticized. It still ended up being a success, so Dice went all in on a sequel, and that sequel would become infamous.
Star Wars: Battlefront 2may have fixed many of the issues with the first game, however, it created so many more. Much of the game was built around a loot box system, which gave players substantial gameplay advantages if they bought into it. It is often cited as one of the reasons that the loot box system is less prominent nowadays, and its inclusion heavily affected the game’s popularity. While much of that was taken out, and Dice did steadily update the game with exciting content, it was still stained by that initial release.
A Brand-New Star Wars Shooter Could Be Exactly What the Franchise Needs
After two controversialStar Wars: Battlefrontgames, it seemed like the IP was put on hold. But then, Aspyr announced theStar Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection, which was supposed to bring the two original games to modern consoles in a whole new bundle. That all sounded exciting, but it was also marred with controversy. The game suffered from numerous technical issues at launch, the multiplayer servers did not work, and content seemed to be missing. That resulted in overwhelmingly negative reviews on Steam, which caused players to turn their backs.
It seems likeStar Wars: Battlefronthas struggled in recent years, so it may be time for the entire franchise to move on. There was a time whenBattlefrontwas the premierStar Wars game, but now it feels like the perfect time for a new FPS to rise in its place. Not only could that amendBattlefront’s issues, but it would also let the developer start fresh without worrying about what came before. Even if it is an extremely similar experience, moving on from that specific branding might be for the best.
