Fandom forThe Way of the Househusbandoutside of Japan is small, but its building into a popular franchise with the story coming to nearly every medium. It started withKousuke Oono’s award-winning manga before a live-action version made its debut in Japan in 2020. Then came theNetflix announcement thatThe Way of the Househusbandwould finally get an anime adaptation in 2021 that will be coming to both Japan and North America. Finally, there’s the spinoff series which is set to debut November 8 on Hulu Japan.

During a time when culture is more sensitive than ever about depictions of gender, specifically of masculinity and what it means to be a man,The Way of The Househusbanddeals with both in a way that is both humorous and respectful.The story follows retired yakuza memberTatsu (aka “Immortal Tatsu”) who is living out the rest of his days as a househusband. Done with with a life of crime and violence, the remaining drama he deals with takes place in the grocery store and caring for his anime-loving wife Miku.
While both the live-action versionand anime follow the plot closely, the3-nen Tatsu-gumi: Gokushufu-senseispin-off changes the premise slightly. Instead of following Tatsu’s daily exploits at home, it puts him in charge of a home economics class after the teacher goes on maternity leave. The spin-off series will run six episodes and there is no word yet whether it will be coming to North America.
The live-action version ofThe Way of the Househusbandstars Hiroshi Tamaki as Tatsu and he will reprise that role in the spin-off television show.Voice actor Kenjiro Tsudaalso returns as narrator for the show.He is slated to voice Tatsuin the upcoming Netflix anime adaptation.
There is no telling whetherThe Way of the Househusbandwill catch on west of Japan, but the fact that it is getting so many different adaptations is a win for good husbands everywhere.
