Summary
In the expansive world ofPokemon, where mysteries and legends abound, theories have become an integral part of the phenomenon that isPokemon. Claims like Ditto being a clone of Mew, Cubone wearing the remains of his deceased mother on his head, or even Jesse and James being married have found confirmation in various Pokemon media, be it through games, Pokedex entries, or comic book series.
However, amidst the confirmed speculations, there are those theories that have captured the imaginations of trainers and fans without receiving official validation. One such theory suggests that one Pokemon is actually possessed by another one - and it makes a lot of sense.
According to a theory, Voltorb is Possessed by Haunter
Voltorb is one of the most easily recognizable Pokemon in the Pokemon universe. That is because Voltorb is an electric-type Pokemon that appears to be a Poke ball, sporting a pair of angry eyes. Some fans theorized that Voltorb’s appearance is much darker than just lazy design. The theory suggests that Voltorb does not just look like a Poke ball, but moreso, he is a Poke ball. A Poke ball that has been possessed by a Haunter - a dual-type Ghost/Poison Pokemon.
According to the theory, at some point, a Haunter tried to possess a Poke ball and became trapped and ended up exploding within the ball. The theory goes on to suggest that this is why the button is missing and Voltorb became its own subspecies of Pokemon. While this has not been confirmed, many fans believe that the proof is in the similarities of the two Pokemon. When comparing an image of Voltorb and Haunter side by side, it appears as though the two Pokemon have almost the exact same eyes. Even when Voltorb evolves into Electrode, the visual appearance doesn’t change much.
Although, Other Theories Suggest Voltorb is Possessed by Rotom
However, while the Voltorb and Haunter theory is the most popular, it is not the only one out there about the Poke Ball-esque Pokemon. According to one Reddit user theory, Voltorb is not possessed by Haunter, but another Pokemon completely - Rotom. Rotom, who wasintroduced in Generation IV, is a dual-type Electric/Ghost Pokemon. The user theorizes that because Rotom has the ability to change forms and possess electronics and Voltorb is an Electric-type Pokemon, therefore making the possession compatible. How did this come to be? Well, according to the rest of the theory, “Rotom tried to possess some primitive/faulty Poke ball and failed to get out. This is the reason why [the] Voltorb line does not have the iconic Rotom face. Eventually, Voltorb became [its] own separate Pokemon via ‘real’ evolution.” While this theory, as most, has not been substantiated by any official sources, it does make a lot of sense.
