One of 2022’s most acclaimed indie games,Tunic, is now on track to launch for the Nintendo Switch, and very soon. Today’s Nintendo Direct presentation wasn’t short on news, with major announcements includingPikmin 4and the release date and official title for TheLegend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s sequel. Nestled amid all these reveals, it was confirmed that developer Andrew Shouldice’sZelda-esque adventure gamewill be coming to Switch on September 27.
It’s about time thatTuniclaunched for another platform, as it’s been exclusive to PC and Xbox since its debut in March this year. Nintendo fans won’t be the only ones to benefit either, asTunicwill also be coming to PS4 and PS5 on that day, following confirmation of a PlayStation release earlier this summer. Considering a lot of fans have been waiting to playTunicsince it was first revealed all the way back in 2015, waiting just two more weeks shouldn’t be hard.

Setting players in the role of an unnamed fox, the game drops them in a vibrant isometric world and leaves them to face its dangers and uncover its mysteries on their own. While the inspiration from classicZeldatitles is more than clear,Tunicalso takes inspiration fromDark Soulsand the like in its approach to combat, exploration, and environmental storytelling. The result has ledmany critics to praiseTunicfor the unique ways it plays with classic and popular gameplay tropes.
More than most games of this sort,Tunicis built around hiding things from players. Most of the game’s text is written in an unknown language, and much of the key information about items, puzzles, and more are only revealed by collecting the pages of an in-game instruction manual. This may make the game less appealing for those who prefer more casual adventures, but it will likely be a welcome challenge for those interested in unravelingone of the most complex worlds of any recent game.
September has proved to be a busy month for Switch owners, with the recent launch ofSplatoon 3being bolstered by notable indie titles likeOobletsandTemTem. That’s slated to continue throughout the rest of the month with games likeReturn to Monkey Island,The DioField Chronicle, andShovel Knight Dig.Tunicwill no doubt make an excellent addition to this lineup, while also givingZeldafans something to scratch that adventure itch with while they wait for the newly-titledLegend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdomto release next spring.
Tunicis available for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, and will launch on September 27 for PS4, PS5, and Switch.
