Summary

ThePokémonfranchise is a huge one, which has spanned decades and many different regions in the game’s world, which has managed to retain a high level of cohesiveness throughout its existence. While most of thePokémonstorylines and ideas that have been introduced in the franchise have eventually been explained, some others haven’t been.

Every franchise has a level of mystery to its history, and so it is unsurprising that with as many games released in thePokémonfranchise, there are a few things that need more explanation than they ever got or are ever likely to get at this point.

7The X&Y Ghost Girl

There are several instances throughout thePokémongameswhen mysterious ghosts have appeared. Usually in each generation of games, there is a particular spooky location to be found and explored, like Lavender Tower in the first generation. In the same way, there is a ghostly apparition inPokémon X&Y.

However, the unusual thing about this character, dubbed by many as “ghost girl” is that she says a strange line, disappears, and is never explained. She simply says “No, You’re Not The One” and vanishes. The strangest part is that this wasn’t a one-off appearance, she reappeared inOmega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire, making sure that this wasn’t some strange occurrence but a planned cameo by a ghost that could be addressed again in the future.

Pokemon Pokeball

6What’s Inside Pokeballs?

One of the great unanswered questions of thePokémonfranchise across all media forms is about the Pokeball. These nifty contraptions work in all sorts of ways to catch Pokémon, from the common balls to theNet Balls and even the Master Ballproviding various levels of catching opportunity. The strange thing is that nobody has ever mentioned what goes on within.

Are the Pokémon miniaturized or are the Pokeballs larger on the inside? There have been many theories over the years about how Pokémon are kept comfortable, or whether they even are comfortable, on the inside of these devices. The goal ofPokémonhas always been to catch them all, but where exactly are they being put in between these battles? And how does merely placing the balls on a machine heal the Pokémon inside?

Pokemon Lt Surge

5The Pokémon Wars

There are many things about the history of thePokémonworld that are completely unknown. Despite a history being referenced inPokémon Legends: Arceuswhen humans and Pokémon were much less friendly towards each other, there has never been a time that a comprehensive history of any wars in this world has been told in full.

But from the very beginning, there have been characters that reference some sort of war that has occurred and that some characters have even taken part in. This includes Lt. Surge, a gym leader in the very first set of Pokémon games. But since then, despite other minor references and mass graves making it seem like there may have been a large war involving Pokémon, nothing more has been mentioned, and this idea remains a mysterious one in the past. This could be explored further though,in anotherPokemon Legendsgame.

Pokemon Cubone

4How Does Cubone Work?

The history of Cubone is one of the least plausible in the Pokedex. The entry says that Cubone mourns the loss of its mother and wears her skull on top of its own head. However, if this is the case, how come every Cubone does this, how are all of their parents deceased, and what does a Cubone look like before it puts on the skull of its mother?

The entire idea isn’t something that works for a Pokémon that has a whole species, although fans have tried to guess how this could work, including one theory that statesthat Kangaskhan could be Cubone’s mother. Whether this is true or not, something about Cubone as a species doesn’t seem to add up at all.

3The Guyana Problem

Several of the major mysteries throughout thePokémonfranchise, and some of the longest-running unsolved mysteries, revolve around Mew. Of all legendaries, Mew seems to be one of the most mysterious of all. Originally, all that was known of Mew came from fossilized remains of an ancient Pokémon, which were apparently found in the Guyana Jungle, though Project Mew may explore this further.

The thing about that is that Guyana is a real country in South America, one of the very few times thatPokémonhas slipped up and mentioned a real-world location, despite thePokémonworld seeming to revolve around fictional regions. Is Guyana actually a place in thePokémonworld, prompting the existence of at least South America in its current form, or is Mew from somewhere else entirely and this was merely a mistake?

2Do People Eat Pokémon?

One of the great unanswered questions across thePokémongames, which gets more context but isn’t fully addressed in thePokémonshows, is whether people eat Pokémon. Since Pokémon appear to be the only real animals available in this world, if people eat meat regularly then they surely must be eating Pokémon.

The idea of food isn’t often addressed in the games, although inPokémon Sword/Shieldthe idea of cooking curry for the Pokémon to eat does come up. But if there is meat in these meals, the Pokémon may be cannibalizing each other at the behest of trainers. This question remains totally unanswerablefor thePokémonfranchise to retain the child-friendly nature it is accustomed to having.

1How Can Arceus Be Beaten?

Arceus has been introduced as not just another legendary Pokémon in the franchise, but the God of Pokémon, and the creator of the world in thePokémonfranchise. But if this is the case, does it not become wild that they could also be captured in a Pokeball?

Even if Arceus could theoretically, as an all-powerful ancient being, be captured, surely they wouldnever be beaten by any other Pokémonthat another trainer can put up against them? It doesn’t make a lot of sense and the truth behind Arceus having created the world seems shady at best.
